Senior Backend Engineer, AI & Agent Platforms

Team

Development Manager

Employment type

Full-time

About the Role

Camping World is the largest RV retailer in the US, and we’re building AI-driven experiences across sales, retail, and service. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll design and ship the Python services and agent systems behind customer-facing assistants (like our RV shopping assistant and AI chat SDR) and the internal tools that support our sales and service teams. You’ll own systems from design through production, and help set the technical bar for how we build with AI.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build, and operate production Python services and APIs that power AI agents and the integrations around them
  • Build multi-step agent workflows (tool use, state management, retrieval, handoffs to humans), and choose the right orchestration framework for the job
  • Own the quality of agent systems: evaluation harnesses, regression testing, observability, guardrails, and cost/latency tuning
  • Integrate agents with business systems such as CRM, commerce, inventory, messaging (Twilio/SendGrid), and analytics
  • Partner with product, retail, and sales stakeholders to turn ambiguous business needs into reliable, well-scoped systems
  • Contribute to architecture decisions, code review, and technical documentation; mentor other engineers on AI-assisted development practices
  • Participate in on-call and incident response for the services you own

What We’re Looking For

  • 6+ years of backend engineering experience, with strong Python (async, typing, testing) and API design (REST, event-driven)
  • Hands-on experience shipping LLM-based applications or agents to production, including prompt design, tool calling, and handling non-determinism
  • Experience with an agent or orchestration framework (LangGraph, Google ADK, or similar) and an understanding of its tradeoffs
  • Solid grounding in cloud infrastructure and containerized deployment (we use GCP and Azure, including Vertex AI, Cloud SQL, BigQuery, AKS/ACA, and Service Bus)
  • Comfort with SQL and relational data modeling; experience with monitoring and observability tooling
  • Clear written and verbal communication, especially explaining AI system behavior and limitations to non-engineers

Nice to Have

  • Experience building evals for LLM systems
  • Background in ecommerce, CRM, or lead-generation workflows
  • Experience with Claude, Vertex AI, or managed agent platforms
  • Familiarity with our broader stack (Next.js/Vercel, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Kong, Cloudflare, Dynatrace)
