ooba is South Africa’s leading home finance facilitator, helping customers secure home loans and related financial services through a multi-product ecosystem.

Our technology environment supports sales, partner, and customer journeys across a mix of established platforms and evolving systems. The focus is on maintaining stability while progressively improving scalability, security, and integration across the landscape.

This 6-months temporary role exists to strengthen ooba’s core backend engineering capability by delivering reliable, maintainable, and well-integrated services that support business-critical platforms.

The Senior Back-End Developer will contribute to both new development and the ongoing improvement of existing systems, ensuring that solutions are practical, production-ready, and aligned with real operational needs. The role requires strong technical judgement, the ability to work within constraints, and a focus on delivering consistent, high-quality outcomes.

Backend Engineering

• Design
and build backend services and APIs that support business platforms

• Develop
and maintain RESTful interfaces for internal and external use

• Ensure
code is structured, maintainable, and aligned to standards

• Diagnose
and resolve issues in production environments

System Enhancement
& Stability

• Maintain
and improve existing applications within the current architecture

• Refactor
components where required to improve performance and reliability

• Support
framework and library upgrades in a controlled manner

• Contribute
to incremental improvements in system design

Integration &
Data Management

• Build and
maintain integrations with internal systems and external partners

• Work with
relational databases including schema design and query optimisation

• Ensure
data consistency and integrity across integrated systems

• Support
data-related troubleshooting and issue resolution

Delivery &
Engineering Practices

• Contribute
to CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes

• Work
collaboratively with DevOps and infrastructure teams

• Participate
in release planning and implementation

• Support
structured development and delivery practices

Quality &
Standards

• Participate
in code reviews and peer collaboration

• Follow
and contribute to coding standards and best practices

• Support
testing activities including unit and integration testing
