Job purpose

Johnson Matthey IT (JM IT) is Johnson Matthey’s global IT function responsible for ensuring that our IT capabilities are not only able to support and integrate technologies but can also offer insight into future IT tools that could provide us with a competitive edge and improved operating efficiencies. 

Johnson Matthey is looking for an experienced C#.NET Developer who will contribute to enabling rapid growth in our Licensing Engineering business. The successful candidate will join the Engineering group within our IT function.

The Engineering team within the Licensing Business in Johnson Matthey is going through a fundamental shift in the way it works from using document centric processes to data centric ones. We are looking for a hands-on .NET developer to work with our team to upgrade existing .NET and VBA based tools and to help us develop the next generation of tools that our engineers will use to design new sustainable processes for our customers.

You will work as part of a cross-functional agile team, collaborating with other developers, process engineering SMEs, and product owners to deliver high-quality software products that meet the needs of our internal users. You will use your skills and knowledge of C# and .NET, to design, develop, and deploy scalable and secure applications that integrate with various systems and data sources. You will also contribute to the continuous improvement of our software development practices and standards, ensuring code quality, performance, and reliability.

You will be responsible for documenting your work in a clear and concise manner. This will include creating technical specifications, user guides, and other documentation to help other members of the team understand your work and use the software effectively.

This is a new team within a mature IT function – meaning you would have the opportunity to help build a delivery team of developers to support the business in this transition.

Principal accountabilities

Technical capability

  • Develop, test, and maintain software applications using C#, and .NET technologies, following best practices and guidelines
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis and design to deployment and maintenance
  • Work closely with other developers, analysts, engineers, and product owners to understand businessrequirements and deliver solutions that meet user expectations and technical specifications
  • Integrate software applications with various systems and data sources, ensuring data accuracy, security, and compliance
  • Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve issues in existing software applications, providing timely and effective support and feedback
  • Document and communicate software design, functionality, and changes to relevant stakeholders
  • Developing a vision and potential team structure for a new project team to support the business as we evolve our ways of working
  • Document all work in a clear and concise manner, including technical specifications, user guides, and other documentation to help other members of the team understand your work and use the software effectively.

Innovation & Knowledge Sharing

  • Research and evaluate new technologies and tools to improve software development efficiency and quality
  • Be a key point of contact and lead collaboration between JMIT and wider Process Engineering function
  • Create and develop relationships with your development team members and other stakeholders, to enable effective and quality delivery Agile DevOps delivery projects and programmes
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior talent and share best practices and learnings with the team

Scope

  • Work with the Digital Technology Manager in the CT Engineering Department to develop tools that interface with engineering databases

  • Work with process engineering SMEs to understand complex engineering requirements and translate these into digital tools

  • Work with citizen developers in the process engineering department to architect technical solutions and instil development best practices

  • Create and develop relationships with development team members and other stakeholders, to enable effective and quality delivery Agile DevOps delivery projects and programmes.

  • Technical Ownership: Lead the technical team in building robust software solutions and help in technical decisions.  This role is responsible for the quality and technical approach by taking ownership and demonstrate pride and excellence in their work.

  • Architectural Direction: Support in driving the technical direction of our products and services considering emerging and legacy technologies. Ensure the development of applications/services design specifications is in line with architecture technical standards.

  • Security Standards and Data Protection: To keep aware of latest data protection and security threats and to make sure we mitigate against these risks against known industry standards.

  • Team and Knowledge Sharing: To implement improvements to our products, services, processes and knowledge sharing within the team.  Mentor other team members by providing advice and coaching.

  • Product and Process Improvements:  Actively participate in the Incident Management and Release Management processes. Contributing regularly to discussions on improving products by recommending technical solutions to solve customer problems and continuously reducing technical debt
