Job Description

Join the dual-series software team supporting McLaren’s Hypercar and IndyCar teams. You will help develop and support high-quality, bespoke software tools that enable our engineering teams to analyse data, improve performance and deliver results on track.

This is an opportunity to contribute to two events within the Triple Crown of Motorsport: the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race and the 24 Heures du Mans. You will work within a close-knit team where everyone takes accountability, continuously improves and plays a vital role in our on-track success.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the development of bespoke software solutions used to analyse data, improve performance and deliver results on track.
  • Work across multiple projects involving a wide range of programming languages, technologies and data formats.
  • Participate in the complete software lifecycle, including requirements analysis, specification, architecture and design, development, deployment, maintenance and support.
  • Support the software and tools produced by the team, collaborating daily with engineers across the IndyCar and Hypercar engineering organisations.
  • Respond to support queries and alerts, check monitoring and systems, and help maintain the smooth day-to-day operation of the team.
  • Contribute to stand-up, retrospective and planning meetings.
  • Continue developing your professional skills and identify new tools and technologies that could benefit the team.
  • Provide event support across different time zones, including frequent out-of-hours and weekend working.
  • Occasionally provide trackside support and travel internationally.
  • Take on additional responsibilities suited to your skills when required to help the team go racing.

Qualifications

  • At least two years of commercial experience applying software engineering in a practical environment.
  • Motorsport experience or equivalent experience within a fast-paced, high-performance environment, such as the military, games or aerospace industries, real-time systems or a similar setting.
  • A strong theoretical understanding of object-oriented programming, design patterns and principles, data structures and algorithms, relational and NoSQL databases, and test-driven development.
  • A BSc in Computer Science or a relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • High proficiency in at least one common programming language used in a commercial environment, such as C# or Python.
  • Some experience with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as Kubernetes is preferred.
  • The adaptability to work with different technologies according to engineering requirements.
  • A collaborative, small-team mentality and the determination to deliver high-quality work on time.
  • The ability to work effectively with engineers and technicians from a range of disciplines.

The team is based at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking and operates a flexible hybrid model, with regular office-based collaboration.
