About the role

We are looking for a Senior Market Analyst to join our Market Analysis team. In this role, you will help shape Rio Tinto’s understanding of procurement, macroeconomic risks and commodity markets by building and maintaining models used to deliver high-quality analysis, market intelligence and forecasts that support commercial decision-making.

The Market Analysis team sits within Rio Tinto’s Commercial Function and is responsible for generating short-to-medium-term market insights (up to 5 years). This incorporates macroeconomic analysis, supply and demand forecasts (including downstream sectors), trading support, and price forecasting. The team leverages on these insights and analysis to support Commercial decision-making and generate value across Sales & Marketing, Procurement and Marine & Logistics.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Procurement, Marine & Logistics Market Analysis, you will:

  • Deepen and broaden our understanding of procurement, marine and associated markets. This includes coal market trade flow analysis for dry-bulk freight market fundamentals.
  • Deliver insights to the Procurement and Commercial Operations teams to improve commercial outcomes, e.g. trading and negotiation support, supplier and competitor intel, price forecasts, tools, models and scenarios.
  • Advise on contractual benchmarks and market-based reference points to support procurement negotiation strategies and ensure alignment with prevailing market conditions.
  • Develop and maintain regular research using our vast array of external research and internal datasets to draw market conclusions that will affect many parts of our business.
  • Collect, synthesize, analyse and interpret information and data to forecast industrial performance; underpinned by a robust and transparent set of methodologies.
  • Collaborate with other Market Analysis teams to coordinate price forecast updates, draw cross-commodity insights, and share best-practice.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • University degree in either a technical or commercial discipline.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience within a commodity focused MNC.
  • Demonstrable experience in a research or analysis focused role.
  • Ability to critically analyse data, identify trends and key market drivers.
  • High attention to detail and a proactive, curious approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to synthesise quantitative and qualitative information into clear insights.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly.
  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills with experience in modelling and data analysis. Willingness to learn new tools and platforms to improve process flows.
  • Good team-player who can work on independent projects and collaboratively as part of a global team.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Commodity market analysis experience at a producer, consumer, trader or consultant.
  • Experience building and managing supply-demand models and forecasting tools.
  • Demonstrated experience using AI tools and coding to automate data collection, processing and reporting workflows.
