This isn’t your average AI Engineering role. We’re looking for a Senior AI Engineer - Lead to help shape how AI solutions are designed, built, and delivered across The Warehouse Group.
As we continue to grow our Data & AI capability, you’ll play a key role leading the technical delivery of AI initiatives – providing hands-on architectural guidance, mentoring emerging engineers, and ensuring solutions move successfully from prototype through to production. If you’re excited by solving complex technical challenges, building scalable AI solutions, and helping grow capability in others, this could be your next opportunity.
Sitting within our Data & AI function and reporting into the Group Chief Data & AI Officer, you’ll work closely with AI Engineers, Data Engineers, Architecture, Security, and wider business stakeholders to deliver pragmatic, secure, and scalable AI solutions across the organisation.
This is a highly technical leadership role where your expertise will be essential from day one. You’ll contribute directly to solution design and engineering while also setting standards, guiding best practice, and acting as a trusted technical lead for the graduate AI capability.
Day to day, you could be involved in:
Providing technical leadership and architectural guidance across AI initiatives delivered by the graduate capability team
Leading the design of AI solutions including LLM-based applications, RAG architectures, and agent workflows
Reviewing and approving code, pipelines, and solution designs to ensure quality, security, scalability, and maintainability
Supporting the transition of AI solutions from prototype to production-ready environments
Mentoring and coaching Graduate AI Engineers and Data Engineers to build capability and engineering discipline
Collaborating with Enterprise IT, Architecture, and Security teams to support production deployments
Contributing hands-on to complex or foundational builds where required
Defining and uplifting AI engineering standards, patterns, and best practices across the function
Acting as a technical escalation point for complex engineering challenges
Staying current with emerging AI technologies and recommending practical adoption opportunities
First and foremost, you’re passionate about building high-quality AI solutions that are scalable, secure, and fit for purpose. You’re equally comfortable being hands-on technically while also mentoring others and providing technical leadership across delivery initiatives.
You will bring the following to the role:
Significant experience in software engineering and applied AI development
Strong proficiency in Python and modern AI application frameworks
Proven experience deploying AI or data-driven solutions into production environments
Strong understanding of cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP
Experience designing APIs, data pipelines, and integration patterns
Strong engineering discipline across code review, testing, documentation, and maintainability
Experience mentoring or guiding early-career engineers
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
A collaborative mindset with the ability to work across technical and non-technical teams
Curiosity, pragmatism, and a continuous improvement mindset
It would also be advantageous if you have experience with:
LLM platforms and architectures including RAG, agent workflows, and evaluation frameworks
MLOps or AI operational practices
Enterprise security, identity, and data governance requirements
Fast-moving, iterative delivery environments
We are intentional about finding the right people, allowing us to perform work as a team that truly makes a difference for the business and our customers. In return, you’ll get exposure to exciting technology, meaningful projects, and the opportunity to learn from passionate and experienced people in the Data & AI space.

The Warehouse Group (TWG) is a New Zealand success story, founded by Sir Stephen Tindall and evolved from a single The Warehouse store to become one of the largest retailing groups in New Zealand with $3 billion in sales. TWG consists of three core retail brands: The Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery, and Noel Leeming. We have over 180 retail stores, online stores as well as distribution centres throughout New Zealand. We also have two overseas sourcing offices located in China and India. We are a people-centred business with more than 10,000 team employees across our locations.
TWG is known for being Here for Good - it’s who we are and what keeps us focused to succeed. It represents our commitment to better living for all New Zealanders, through sustainable retail products and practices and the mission of contributing to the long-lasting health of our planet.
Over the years, we’ve raised over 50 million dollars for New Zealand communities and have contributed to countless community-focussed initiatives. We were the first company in New Zealand to add a Shielded Site link to the Women's Refuge website to help protect those experiencing family violence, and were a key supporter of the Government’s Family Violence Victims’ Protection Bill. We were New Zealand’s first large company and the third major retailer in the world to go carbon neutral.
While we are 40+ years old as a business, in many ways we feel we’re just getting started.
