Major tasks and responsibilities of position

  • Owns the identification of opportunities to unlock value with AI across the organization, derives what AI must deliver, frames robust validatable value hypotheses, and owns the exploration, development, evaluation, and implementation of the resulting AI solutions end to end, setting the approach.
  • Engages and mobilizes owners and senior stakeholders, so they are motivated and enabled to turn opportunities into targeted AI initiatives.
  • Holds full project responsibility in AI initiatives using agile and design thinking methods, from ideation and conception to realization, and steers scope.
  • Owns handover quality end to end – bridging operating units, domain experts, and technical teams, deciding where feasibility pre-studies are needed (e.g. data availability and quality), and prioritizing initiatives within the broader AI portfolio through to staffing and delivery.
  • Responsible for and shapes the strategy of communication and engagement initiatives that ensure organizational awareness of and broad participation in AI adoption, influencing and leading at senior and unit-leadership level, setting direction across functional boundaries and acting as a sparring partner for leaders.
  • Responsible for designing and conducting training and support initiatives and defines standards and curricula that enable user-friendly adoption and optimized use of AI solutions across user groups.
  • Steers external partners (AI solution vendors and strategy/management consultancies) as an equal counterpart – managing delivery, signing off on quality, knowledge transfer, and value for money – and is responsible for measuring, interpreting, communicating, and documenting the impact of AI solutions, deriving insights and recommendations that shape future AI initiatives.
  • Guides and develops less senior colleagues by reviewing and signing off on their work, sharing expertise, and setting best practices and documentation standards for the function.
  • Stays at the forefront of AI developments and actively experiments with new capabilities in practice, role-modeling the curiosity, learning discipline, and responsible experimentation expected of the entire organization.

Value added to the success of the company – what are the main objectives of the function?

  • Realizes the value proposition of AI for Covestro by embedding AI into the ways our operating units work, driving recurring value validated with the operating units.
  • Raises the overall capability and effectiveness of the AI Adoption function by guiding colleagues and setting standards.
  • Contributes to Covestro's strategic, measurable economic ambition for value creation from AI and to the EBITDA targets of the region.

Qualifications

  • University degree (preferably Master's or PhD) in a relevant field such as AI, computer science, business/administration, innovation or technology management, or organizational development.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in an international environment and with virtual teams, including experience leading AI or transformation projects.
  • Working familiarity with the current AI technology landscape – spanning generative, agentic, and analytical/predictive AI – sufficient to assess applicability, guide adoption, and engage credibly with technical experts and vendors as an equal counterpart. Deep technical implementation expertise is not required.
  • Proven experience leading organizational transformation and change – ideally in an AI or technology-enablement context – including how new ways of working are adopted, sustained, and scaled across functions.
  • Consulting experience in the chemical or manufacturing industry is preferred.
  • Genuine curiosity and learning discipline: a visible track record of exploring, testing, and applying new AI hands-on, and of role-modeling this for others.
  • Excellent communication, persuasion, and influencing skills: audience-aware and outcome-oriented, able to inform and convince as well as inspire and motivate; able to interact, influence, and lead at all organizational levels, including senior and unit leadership.
  • Ability to work with cultural agility and build/maintain relationships in a multicultural, interdisciplinary environment.
  • Fluent in Chinese and English.
