About the Ministry for Regulation

The Ministry for Regulation is a small government agency with a big job to do.

We’re focused on lifting quality across all regulatory systems and supporting agencies with regulatory responsibilities to align with good practice. We want it to be easier for businesses to innovate, grow and comply, while still ensuring the benefits from regulation that we take for granted won’t change.

We are a small group of dedicated professionals, working in a 'can do' environment.

About the role

This is an opportunity to do meaningful work that shapes how regulation performs across government.

As a Senior Advisor, you’ll contribute to high-impact reviews and work directly with agencies and stakeholders. You’ll support decision-making at senior levels and help drive improvements across regulatory systems.

This role would suit someone with experience in policy who is looking to apply their skills to system-level work across government.

Your work will include:

  • Leading policy development for high-priority regulatory issues by analysing regulatory systems, identifying issues and developing practical, evidence-based recommendations

  • Leading the development of Cabinet papers, briefings and Ministerial correspondence

  • Building strong relationships and supporting engagement with stakeholders across government and externally

  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of our review approach, helping to refine our methods, tools and ways of working

  • Working at pace on priority issues, including contributing to Official Information Act requests and parliamentary questions with sound judgement and clarity

What you’ll bring:

  • 5+ years’ experience in policy

  • A tertiary qualification (or equivalent government experience)

  • Strong understanding of policy frameworks, and the machinery of government

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to distil complex ideas and influence effectively

  • Proven ability to lead work independently and support others in a team setting

  • Strategic thinking and sound judgement, including political awareness

  • A collaborative approach

  • A genuine commitment to improving regulation for all New Zealanders.

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to work on high-profile, system-wide regulatory issues

  • A collaborative and supportive team environment

  • Flexible working options and wellbeing benefits; and

  • A modern office with great views, close to public transport.
