Te Tari Taiwhenua, Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), plays a central role in New Zealand’s public service delivery, overseeing vital services such as digitising government services, supporting communities, regulatory frameworks, and identity management.

Ministerial Services (MS), a business group within the Partnerships and Commissions branch, is responsible for ensuring that Members of the Executive have access to the services and support they need to discharge their day-to-day Ministerial responsibilities. As a significant employer on the Parliamentary precinct, MS has responsibility for Ministerial Office staffing arrangements, including supporting positive workplace culture and employee wellbeing.

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Advisor to join the small team responsible for delivering the successful General Election 2026 programme. The General Election represents a major event where New Zealander’s decide who will represent them in Parliament for the next three years. Ministerial Services is looking for an individual to work in a small but highly agile team of people who will plan and successfully deliver activities required to support the incoming 55th Executive following the 2026 General Election.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic advice and support as required to assist the Director and other Senior Advisors within the programme
  • Engagement with MS Leadership team and staff to identify where work might be necessary
  • Assist with the review and updating of documentation and training material for staff and key stakeholders
  • Leadership of risk management and response planning, including stepping into areas on an as needed basis
  • Provide quality strategic advice, and reporting to senior leadership and governance groups on a regular cycle
  • Work in a multidisciplinary team, which fosters a high-performance culture and delivers on tight timelines
  • Operate as a highly effective member of the team and undertake other duties consistent with the role as required

About You

You’ll have proven experience working in a team that has lead complex, high-stakes projects or national-level programmes, along with a detailed understanding of governance, compliance, and legislative frameworks.

You’ll need to have excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, and a good understanding of the structure of government, to be successful in this role. You’ll also need to be able to work in partnership with your team and maintain trusted relationships with diverse stakeholders. Your ability to work quickly and effectively will be critical to your success.
