Job Description

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

The Senior Advisor Role will be reporting to the Senior Manager, Capital Communications, and will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to drive strategic communications for the Capital Projects Group’s subway program. You will lead the planning, development, and delivery of impactful communications materials, support media relations, manage issues and emerging risks, and act as a key liaison for stakeholders.

In-Office Requirement – NON-HR: This role is an in‑office position based at our 97 Front Street Office location. Our team is highly collaborative, and much of our work benefits from in‑person co‑creation, relationship‑building, and hands‑on partnership with leaders across the organization.
What will I be doing?
  • Leads the planning and execution of communications strategies and associated tactics (e.g. comprehensive plans, media Q&As, press releases, newsletters, website content, social media and event materials).

  • Acts as a relationship manager and key contact to formulate and implement strategic communications with internal and external stakeholders (e.g. political, public, media, government, contractor,employees and anticipates communications risks and opportunities.

  • Works with community engagement team to develop clear, timely local communications that keep residents informed about construction activities happening in their community.

  • Develops responses for media calls and social media comments as they arise.

  • Anticipates critical issues and trends; develops comprehensive issues strategies in partnership with project team members to ensure a strong process to identify, prioritize, manage and minimize issues.

  • Monitors, identifies and responds to shifting stakeholder/public expectations that may have an impact on the organization and transit initiatives.

  • Develops strong relationships with project delivery teams and contractors and manages and oversees contract deliverables including execution of long and short-term communications initiatives.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
  • Completion of a degree in communications, public relations, or a related discipline – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent (e.g. government transportation and policy analysis).
  • Demonstrated training /experience in communications, public affairs, journalism or equivalent.
  • Familiarity and experience working with the diverse communities that make up the region.
  • Pursues innovation and uses strong analytic skills and knowledge of strategic communications planning and execution.
  • Project and time management skills to coordinate multiple complex projects.
  • Ability to understand, use, and communicate highly technical information to lay audiences.
  • Independent thinking and the ability to work autonomously to undertake proactive communications activities in support of major projects.
  • Excellent writing and negotiation skills to gather information and write key messages, news releases and other content, and develop presentations, speaking notes, submissions and correspondence.
