Job Description
Our client, a multinational engineering and construction organisation, is seeking a highly competent Accountant to support the Finance Management Department by ensuring accurate financial reporting, statutory compliance, tax administration, and effective financial controls across the organisation's operations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing day-to-day accounting functions, supporting tax compliance and audit processes, overseeing financial transactions related to construction projects and toll operations, and maintaining accurate financial records. The role requires a detail-oriented professional capable of working in a dynamic project environment while ensuring compliance with Zambian tax regulations, financial reporting standards, and company policies.
Responsibilities
Financial Accounting & Reporting
- Process accounting entries for routine business transactions accurately and in a timely manner.
- Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Maintain accurate accounting records and supporting documentation.
- Ensure compliance with internal accounting policies and financial procedures.
- Support the Finance Manager with financial reporting and analysis.
Tax Compliance & Administration
- Prepare and organize monthly tax documentation.
- Independently prepare and submit statutory tax returns, including:
- VAT
- PAYE
- Withholding Tax (WHT)
- Corporate Income Tax
- Assist in drafting tax correspondence and communications with regulatory authorities.
- Support tax refund audits by preparing documentation, tracking audit progress, and resolving audit queries.
- Assist with annual corporate income tax filings and financial statement audits.
- Support responses to tax audits initiated by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).
- Assist with resolving other company taxation matters.
Banking & Project Financial Management
- Review and process Local Purchase Order (LPO) requests from construction projects.
- Liaise with the Zambia Revenue Authority regarding LPO approvals.
- Process and record construction-related banking transactions.
- Organize and submit invoices to project owners and clients.
- Maintain accurate bank reconciliations and financial transaction records.
Toll Revenue & Asset Management
- Conduct periodic inspections and verification exercises at toll plazas.
- Verify Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) user payments and issue receipts.
- Perform periodic physical verification of fixed assets and update accounting records accordingly.
- Maintain accurate asset registers and inventory records.
External Stakeholder Coordination
- Liaise with banks, accounting firms, government institutions, and other external stakeholders.
- Draft business correspondence and official letters.
- Coordinate document submissions and track approvals and responses.
- Ensure proper management of incoming and outgoing financial documentation.
Continuous Improvement & Professional Development
- Participate in weekly and monthly departmental review meetings.
- Prepare regular work plans and performance summaries.
- Continuously improve accounting and taxation knowledge through training.
- Deliver internal training sessions on Zambian taxation and accounting principles.
- Recommend process improvements that enhance financial efficiency and compliance.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain organized paper and electronic financial records.
- Archive accounting vouchers, supporting documents, contracts, and correspondence.
- Ensure strict adherence to company policies relating to finance, attendance, safety, and operational procedures.
- Support departmental initiatives and participate in team-building activities.
- Perform any other duties assigned by management.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related discipline.
- ACCA qualification or equivalent professional accounting certification.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in accounting, taxation, or finance within Zambia.
- Experience in a multinational manufacturing or construction company is added advantage.
- Membership with the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA)
- Strong knowledge of:
- Financial accounting and reporting
- Zambian tax legislation (VAT, PAYE, WHT, Corporate Income Tax)
- Audit coordination and statutory compliance
- Construction/project accounting
- Banking operations and transactional controls
- Fixed asset management and verification
- Internal controls and financial governance
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Ability to prepare accounting entries, review expenses, and manage financial transactions independently.
- Experience communicating with banks, auditors, accounting firms, and regulatory institutions.
