Job Description

About Us:

vineyard vines is a highly successful, privately held, American clothing and accessory retailer founded in 1998 on Martha's Vineyard by brothers, Shep and Ian Murray. With Shep & Ian still at the helm today, vineyard vines has experienced exponential year-over-year growth and now operates over 120 retail locations including an outlet division, a successful e-commerce business, a domestic distribution center, and an expanding corporate headquarters. In addition, vineyard vines is carried in major department stores such as Nordstrom and Bloomingdales as well as numerous specialty boutiques across the US.

vineyard vines was founded on a state of mind that Every day should feel this good. You don't need to be on a beach, by the ocean, or on vacation to have "Every day should feel this good" moments. It's a state of mind that we all experience, and one where everyone is invited. At vineyard vines, we don't live an #EDSFTG life away from our desks - we bring it to work with us, too.

In our stores, at our Harbor Drive headquarters, or working remotely, our company culture is fun, encouraging, and welcoming to all. We work hard and play harder, and we never take ourselves too seriously. And while we have many company goals, our number one priority is making vineyard vines a great place to work for all employees. Our team is our family, and we'd never have grown to where we are today without them. We're committed to building an inclusive team across all channels, departments, and stores within our community. We hope you'll join us and see what the smiling pink whale is all about.

The Senior Accountant will play a key role in the corporate accounting function, taking ownership of critical components of the monthly financial close, complex balance sheet reconciliations, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate is a high-performing accounting professional who pairs strong technical GAAP knowledge with an analytical mindset. You are a self-starter who looks beyond the numbers to identify process improvements, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and maintains a great attitude with the mentality that no task is too big or too small.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Month-End Close Ownership: Prepare and review complex month-end journal entries, ensuring accurate and timely closing of the general ledger.
  • Advanced Reconciliations: Own high-volume and intricate balance sheet reconciliations (including cash, prepaids, accruals, and intercompany accounts), investigating and resolving variances proactively.
  • Financial Analysis: Perform deep-dive Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss variance analysis; identify key business drivers, trends, and anomalies to support management reporting.
  • Audit Leadership: Serve as a primary point of contact for the annual external audit, managing the preparation of audit PBC (Provided by Client) schedules and effectively responding to auditor inquiries.
  • Process Improvement: Evaluate existing accounting workflows and systems to identify areas for automation, increased efficiency, and stronger internal controls.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with retail, e-commerce, and operations departments to ensure financial accuracy and support ad-hoc business initiatives.
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance and support to junior accounting staff, reviewing workflows and fostering a collaborative team environment.

What you bring:

  • Education & Certification: Bachelor of Science in Accounting (or equivalent) from an accredited university. CPA license (or active progression toward licensure) is highly preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience. Big 4 or regional public accounting experience is a major plus.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Thorough, applied understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
    • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel (vlookups, index/match, pivot tables, and complex data manipulation).
    • Experience with major mid-to-enterprise level ERP accounting software (Microsoft Dynamics Solomon, MMS, or similar platforms preferred).
  • Mindset & Soft Skills:
    • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with an unyielding attention to detail.
    • Proven ability to work independently, take complete ownership of your work product, and manage competing priorities under tight close deadlines.
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain financial concepts to non-finance partners.

Every Day Will Feel This Good Because:

  • We have a fun-spirited entrepreneurial culture filled with truly “good” people
  • We offer a generous employee discount so you can rep our lifestyle on-and-off the boat
  • We offer a competitive salary package, 401-K, commuter benefits, and paid-family leave, health savings, flex spending accounts, life & disability insurance
  • We have an onsite gym as well as health & financial wellness programs to keep you active
  • We offer 2 summer Fridays to take off in addition to a competitive vacation policy & holiday calendar
