Purpose
Reporting to the Manager, Accounting, the Senior Accountant plays a key role in supporting the finance function through accurate financial reporting, balance sheet integrity, and continuous process improvement. This role is responsible for managing capital expenditure accounting, maintaining inventory accuracy, developing and managing the fixed asset register, and providing mentorship and training to junior accounting staff.
In addition to technical expertise, the Senior Accountant is expected to demonstrate professionalism, accountability, collaboration, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and able to build effective working relationships across teams.
Key Areas of Responsibilities
Financial Accounting & Reporting
• Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules with a high degree of accuracy and accountability.
• Ensure accuracy and completeness of month-end and year-end closing activities while meeting established deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Maintain strong balance sheet integrity through timely reconciliations, variance analysis, and resolution of outstanding items.
• Support audit requests and provide required documentation during internal and external audits.
• Analyze the accounting treatment of routine and complex transactions, including drafting accounting memos where applicable.
• Exercise sound judgment and demonstrate ownership in identifying issues, evaluating options, and making recommendations.
• Anticipate potential accounting or reporting issues and proactively work toward timely resolution.
• Communicate financial information and key issues effectively to stakeholders across the organization.
Capital Expenditure & Fixed Assets
• Review and process capital expenditure transactions in accordance with accounting policies and internal procedures.
• Develop and maintain a comprehensive fixed asset register, ensuring accurate capitalization, depreciation, and asset tracking.
• Monitor asset additions, disposals, transfers, and impairments in a timely manner.
• Partner collaboratively with FP&A and operational teams to ensure accurate recording and tracking of capex projects.
• Evaluate the financial implications and business impact of capex transactions and decisions.
• Maintain organized working papers and supporting documentation to support transparency, audit readiness, and knowledge sharing across the team.
Inventory Accounting
• Perform periodic inventory reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and communicate findings effectively to relevant stakeholders.
• Work closely with operations and supply chain teams to improve inventory controls, processes, and reporting accuracy.
• Support inventory counts and ensure accurate valuation and financial reporting of inventory balances.
• Demonstrate a solution-oriented mindset by proactively identifying process gaps and recommending improvements.
Process Improvement & System Development
• Proactively identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows, internal controls, and reporting efficiency.
• Assist in implementing new procedures related to fixed assets, inventory management, and financial reporting.
• Support system enhancements and accounting process automation initiatives where applicable.
• Embrace change positively and adapt quickly to new systems, processes, priorities, and company goals.
Team Support & Development
• Provide training, coaching, and day-to-day guidance to junior accountants to support their development and success.
• Review work performed by junior team members and provide constructive feedback.
• Promote knowledge sharing and contribute to a collaborative, positive, and inclusive team environment.
• Communicate effectively with team members, leaders, and business partners while maintaining strong working relationships and professionalism.
Qualifications
Education/Certifications/Knowledge
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• CPA designation required.
Experience
• 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting, tax, and audit.
• Strong knowledge of fixed assets, capex/project accounting, and inventory accounting.
• Experience handling multiple entities and multiple foreign currencies.
• Experience with ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite or similar) is an asset.
• Experience in implementation of new system is an asset.
