Senior Accountant


Colorado Springs Utilities’ Planning and Finance Division is excited to welcome a dynamic Senior Accountant to our Accounting Team!

This is your chance to step into a high-impact role where your advanced accounting expertise will shine. You’ll lead senior-level accounting and reporting efforts, dive into complex analytical and research projects, and support the financial operations of Colorado Springs Utilities, select joint ventures, and affiliated authorities.

In this role, you’ll be at the heart of ensuring financial integrity—driving accurate accounting transactions, reliable financial statements, and strong internal controls that align with GAAP, policies, and regulations. Your knowledge, initiative, and problem-solving skills will be highly valued as you take on challenging accounting work that truly matters—supporting a trusted utility and making a real difference for our community.

What will you be doing?

  • Preparing journal entries, analyzing, and adjusting ledger balances; preparing accounting and financial statements and reports
  • Analyzing financial and accounting information; recording and reconciling significant financial transactions
  • Ensuring compliance and consistent application of appropriate principles, policies, and practices; developing, preparing, and documenting accounting policies and procedures
  • Assist in leading the research and implementation of required governmental accounting standards for the organization with minimal management oversight
  • Assisting in monthly accounting close and annual external audits, including preparing the published financial statements and accompanying notes
  • Data gathering and interpretation, research, summarization of findings, and tracking records/results
  • Recommending changes/improvements based upon analysis and developing processes to increase efficiency or reduce cost
  • Answering complex inquiries from other staff members, employees, the public, departmental personnel, and various groups and organizations
  • Leading projects and promoting teamwork
  • Anticipating customer needs and producing quality, accurate, prompt, and reliable results reported clearly and concisely verbally and in writing


Who you are:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting is required, and 5 or more years of experience in a relevant accounting or auditing field
  • A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is preferred
  • Knowledge and a strong understanding of accounting principles and concepts
  • Proficiency in accounting software, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and good communication abilities
  • The ability to produce quality, accurate, prompt, and reliable results that are easy to understand
  • Forward-thinking, customer-focused, strives for the highest standards, fosters professional growth, and thrives on challenges in an ever-changing environment


We are also interested in accounting experience in the utilities or energy industry, as well as fixed assets, grants, derivatives/hedging, so please be sure to highlight this experience on your resume/application.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
