About the role

We are looking for a Senior ABAP AI Engineer who helps customers prepare SAP applications and custom developments for AI-enabled scenarios. The role focuses on improving metadata quality, semantic consistency, business object definitions and application structures so that SAP systems can be consumed effectively by SAP Joule, AI assistants, AI agents and future SAP Business AI capabilities.

This is a hands-on role working directly with SAP applications, CDS Views, APIs, business objects and data models. The successful candidate combines strong ABAP development skills with practical knowledge of AI enablement concepts and understands how enterprise applications and data must be structured for generative AI solutions.

The role is customer-facing and requires close collaboration with customer development teams, application owners and business stakeholders. The primary focus is practical implementation, data cleanup and enablement rather than enterprise architecture ownership.

W͏hat will you do

Metadata Enablement & Semantic Enrichment

• Enrich SAP applications and backend services with meaningful metadata and semantic context.
• Define, maintain and improve semantic descriptions for business objects, data models, APIs, CDS Views, business processes and customer-specific extensions.
• Improve semantic consistency across SAP applications and custom developments.
• Identify and resolve gaps in metadata quality that reduce AI usability and business context.
• Apply metadata governance and quality standards in day-to-day implementation work.

AI Enablement Preparation

• Prepare SAP applications and custom developments for SAP Joule, SAP AI Core, Generative AI Hub, LLM-based copilots, RAG solutions, AI agents and orchestration frameworks.
• Assess existing applications and services for practical AI consumption readiness.
• Create or improve semantic structures that help AI solutions understand SAP business processes, objects and data.
• Prepare structured business context for AI-driven user experiences.
• Implement required adjustments in CDS Views, services, APIs and custom ABAP developments.

Data Cleanup & Structure Optimization

• Analyze existing SAP developments for structural, semantic, naming and metadata-related gaps.
• Clean up and harmonize application data structures, business object definitions and service models.
• Improve data quality and consistency across business objects, CDS Views and APIs.
• Refine CDS Views and service definitions to improve discoverability, clarity and AI consumption.
• Ensure SAP assets expose sufficient business meaning and context for AI-based solutions.
• Work hands-on with customer teams to implement agreed data and metadata improvements.

Customer Collaboration & Workshops

• Work directly with customer application teams, SAP developers, application owners and business stakeholders.
• Conduct focused workshops to understand existing SAP developments, data structures and business processes.
• Explain AI enablement and metadata requirements clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Help customers identify concrete areas where data cleanup, metadata enrichment and semantic improvements are required.
• Document findings, implementation actions, dependencies and completed improvements.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys improving and enhancing existing SAP applications rather than designing enterprise-wide architectures. You will regularly work with fragmented metadata, inconsistent business object definitions, legacy developments and customer-specific extensions that were not originally designed for AI consumption.

The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on analysis and implementation, creates structure from inconsistent application assets and improves AI readiness through practical data, metadata and service enhancements.

• Not focused on defining enterprise AI strategy.
• The emphasis is hands-on enablement, data cleanup, metadata enrichment, semantic modeling and preparation of SAP applications for AI consumption.

What You Bring͏

Required Technical Expertise

• Strong hands-on experience with Classical ABAP and ABAP Objects (OO).
• Strong experience with CDS Views, OData services, RFC/BAPI technologies and SAP Gateway.
• Practical experience with SAP BTP and SAP application integration.
• Ability to analyze and modify existing custom SAP developments, services and data models.
• Experience improving metadata, data structures, interfaces and semantic descriptions in SAP environments.

AI & Data Understanding

• Practical understanding of Large Language Models (LLMs) and generative AI solution patterns.
• Understanding of prompt engineering and context engineering.
• Understanding of semantic data models, knowledge graphs and vector-based retrieval concepts.
• Understanding of Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), AI agents and orchestration concepts.
• Ability to connect AI requirements with the practical preparation of SAP data, metadata and backend services.

Application & Data Structure Skills

• Hands-on understanding of metadata modeling, data quality and semantic business modeling.
• Practical knowledge of API design and governance standards.
• Understanding of domain-driven design concepts as they relate to business objects and service boundaries.
• Working knowledge of enterprise application and integration principles without requiring architecture ownership.
• Ability to identify structural gaps and implement pragmatic improvements in SAP applications.

Customer-Facing Capabilities

• Strong communication and customer interaction skills.
• Ability to facilitate focused workshops and working sessions.
• Experience working directly with customer development teams and business stakeholders.
• Ability to explain technical concepts in a clear, practical and outcome-oriented manner.
• Strong documentation, analysis and follow-through skills.

A senior ABAP developer with a strong interest in AI enablement, semantic data structures and application modernization. The ideal candidate understands that successful AI solutions depend on clean structures, meaningful metadata and sufficient business context.

The candidate is comfortable working directly within SAP applications, CDS Views, APIs and business objects to improve AI readiness. They can interact confidently with customers while remaining primarily focused on hands-on implementation, data cleanup, metadata enrichment and semantic improvements rather than architecture ownership.
