Role Summary

The Senior Backup Administrator is responsible for designing, administering, monitoring, and improving enterprise backup and recovery services across physical, virtual, cloud, and database environments. This role ensures that critical business data is protected, recoverable, and aligned with agreed recovery point objectives and recovery time objectives. The position requires strong technical expertise, operational discipline, and the ability to support incident response, disaster recovery testing, audit readiness, and continuous service improvement.

We are looking for a Senior Backup Administrator to join our IT Operations team and lead the management of enterprise backup and recovery services. The ideal candidate will have strong experience supporting backup platforms, troubleshooting complex recovery issues, improving data protection controls, and ensuring recoverability for business-critical systems. This role is suited for a technically strong administrator who can operate independently, support operational excellence, and contribute to business continuity and cyber resilience initiatives.

This role may require participation in after-hours maintenance windows, disaster recovery exercises, and scheduled on-call support. The successful candidate should be comfortable working in a fast-paced IT operations environment and collaborating with global or cross-functional teams.

Your Role

• You will administer and maintain enterprise backup platforms, policies, schedules, storage targets, and retention configurations.
• Monitor daily backup jobs, investigate failures, perform root cause analysis, and drive timely remediation.
• Perform file-level, server-level, virtual machine, database, and application recovery activities as required.
• Design and validate backup and recovery procedures to meet defined business continuity, disaster recovery, RPO, and RTO requirements.
• Support regular restore testing, disaster recovery exercises, and evidence collection for audit and compliance purposes.
• Manage backup capacity, deduplication, storage utilization, replication, archiving, and lifecycle management.
• Implement and maintain secure backup practices, including access control, encryption, immutability, and ransomware-resilient recovery approaches.
• Develop and maintain operational documentation, runbooks, knowledge base articles, technical diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
• Coordinate with infrastructure, database, application, security, network, and vendor teams to resolve backup-related incidents and service requests.
• Participate in change management, incident management, problem management, and on-call support rotations as required.
• Identify opportunities to automate repetitive backup administration tasks using scripting, orchestration tools and API integration.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior backup or infrastructure administrators.

About You

Required Qualifications

• You must have a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
• 5-8 or more years of hands-on experience administering enterprise backup and recovery platforms.
• Strong experience with backup technologies such as Veritas NetBackup, NBU Flex Appliance, Commvault, Veeam, Rubrik, NinjaOne, or similar platforms.
• Experience supporting Windows, Linux, virtualization platforms, enterprise storage, and database backup integrations.
• Proven ability to design optimal database backup strategies, including backup frequency, retention, recovery models, and validation approaches aligned with business RPO, RTO, compliance, and resiliency requirements.
• Good understanding of backup methodologies, retention policies, disaster recovery concepts, and data protection best practices.
• Experience troubleshooting backup failures, storage issues, network connectivity, performance bottlenecks, and restore problems.
• Familiarity with IT service management processes, including incident, change, and problem management.
• Strong documentation, communication, analytical, and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Experience with cloud backup and archival services such as Microsoft Azure or AWS.
• Experience with immutable backup, cyber recovery vaults, and ransomware recovery strategies.
• Experience with scripting or automation using PowerShell, Python, Bash, or similar tools.
• Exposure to enterprise monitoring tools and reporting dashboards.
• Knowledge of storage technologies, tape libraries, SAN/NAS environments, deduplication appliances, MSDP within NetBackup Flex Appliance storage shelves, and object storage or blob-based storage.
• Relevant certifications such as ITIL Foundation, Microsoft, VMware, Linux, cloud, storage, or vendor-specific backup certifications.

Key Performance Indicators

• Backup job success rate and failure remediation time.
• Successful completion of scheduled restore tests and disaster recovery exercises.
• Compliance with defined RPO and RTO targets.
• Timely completion of incident, service request, and change tickets.
• Accuracy and completeness of backup documentation, reporting, and audit evidence.
• Capacity utilization trends and proactive storage planning outcomes.

Salary Range: CAD $80,000 to CAD $130,000
