Job Description

SEN Mentor

Department: Recruitment

Employment Type: Contract

Location: Folkestone, Kent

Compensation: £25.00 - £35.00 / hour

Could you be the person to guide young people to a brighter future?
For those with SEN and SEMH needs, engaging with life in the outside world can be daunting. Whether it’s a challenge to engage with education, gain work experience or even just get out and about in the community, our young people have faced barriers that leave them feeling discouraged and disconnected from society. Every young person deserves someone who won't give up on them - could that be you?
At Fresh Start in Education, we’re looking for a proactive, person-centred person to design and deliver personalised learning sessions that spark confidence and a sense of hope for a young adult in the Folkestone area. Whether it’s building on the student's love of cooking, exploring opportunities for future employment, planning and delivering AQA courses, or supporting with every day life skills, you’ll help the student build resilience and explore their next steps. One learner, one relationship, one small step at a time.
With allowances for travel and resources and full support from our dedicated team, this flexible role gives you the freedom to deliver learning in the ways that you feel best meet the student’s needs and interests. If you have the experience, resilience and commitment to transform lives, we would love to hear from you.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Working 1:1 with a young adult in their home and community in the Folkestone area
  • Planning and delivering personalised sessions that reflect the student’s needs, interests and abilities
  • Running 3 hour sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 1pm - 4pm
  • Conducting risk assessments and ensuring safeguarding procedures are followed
  • Engaging with students who may have ASD, PDA, OCD, sensory or SEMH needs and helping them achieve outcomes at their pace
  • Working flexibly as part of a compassionate, expert-led team that values you and your skills

Who we’re looking for:

We welcome applications from individuals who have:

  • Experience (at least 1 year) as mentors, teachers, tutors, teaching assistants, SEN specialists and education professionals who have directly supported young people with SEN/SEMH needs
  • A background in AQA, ASDAN, Functional Skills, Post 16 or specialist SEND environments
  • Availability on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons, 1pm - 4pm
  • An up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding and child protection

What you can expect from Fresh Start in Education:

  • £25–£35 per hour, depending on experience
  • Travel subsidy and £15 per session resource allowance
  • Free access to counselling and wellbeing services, pension options and store discounts
  • Dedicated line manager, support and inclusion in a supportive, expert team
  • Bank staff role (PAYE), offering both short-term and long-term placements

About Fresh Start In Education Ltd

At Fresh Start in Education Ltd. we specialise in the re-engagement of students who have been excluded from school or are out of education. This includes students who are at risk of exclusion or have already been permanently or temporarily excluded, school refusers, young offenders, those with emotional or behavioural difficulties, serious health issues or those who are generally disengaged from education. We work with all ages from early years through to adult.

We provide bespoke, child-centred, high quality education programmes, which ensure that all the students that we work with have outstanding opportunities to re-integrate into regular or specialist education. We provide the encouragement and tools for students to develop and apply the knowledge, skills and understanding that will help them become successful at learning, confident as individuals and to live productive and responsible lives.

We work with Local Authorities, Schools and Private Individuals – parents or adoptive parents.

We are a UK WIDE provision – we go anywhere – anytime. We deliver our services wherever the student is, so no matter how disengaged or hostile to education we will meet them where they are and work from there
