Semi-Trailer Operator

Please note that the starting rate of pay for this position is set at $36.29/hour, followed by an increase to $38.11/hour after successfully completing probation.

Our Gravel Production team is responsible for transporting heavy equipment, oversized loads, and materials used by Colorado Springs Utilities' construction and maintenance crews. We are hiring an experienced Semi-Trailer Operatorto contribute to our ability to allocate personnel, heavy equipment, transportation services, and various resources to all four of our utility services (natural gas, electric, water, and wastewater). You will directly impact the success of our recycling, mining, and staging/transfer facility operations. A day in the life of a Semi-Trailer Operator may include:

  • Operating semi-trucks with a variety of trailers, end dumps, belly dumps, flat decks, and lowboys
  • Operating semi-tractors with 9,000-gallon tankers and 4,000-gallon tandem units
  • Operating roll-off trucks transporting 20- and 30-yard roll-off containers
  • Maintaining and performing preventive maintenance on semi-trucks and trailers

Who You Are

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required; a tanker endorsement is preferred
  • Extensive experience with operating Class 6, 7, and 8 tractors, trailers, and tandems
  • Experience with operating front-end loaders and skid steers is valued
  • Ability to read and interpret street maps
  • Ability to inspect commercial vehicles in accordance with Federal and State requirements
  • Knowledge of Federal and State Department of Transportation regulations

Experience, knowledge, and skills in the following areas are valued:

  • Operating various pieces of heavy equipment (e.g., skid steers, front-end loaders)
  • Determining vehicle weight capacities
  • Transporting materials
  • Safety regulations
  • Highway weight and bridge restrictions


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exerts 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or 25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or 10-20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work..
  • Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises.
