Examples of duties

This role supports maintenance needs across multiple shops and work areas at Norristown State Hospital. As a Semi-Skilled Laborer, you will perform the following duties:

  • Shop Assistance: Complete assigned work in labor, heat, plumbing, paint, electric, boiler plant, and grounds areas
  • Roadwork Duties: Repair blacktop, cement roads, sidewalks, parking lots, curbing, gutters, and catch basins
  • Material Handling: Load, haul, and unload trash, debris, and other materials across facility spaces
  • Building Maintenance: Help repair wooden structures, replace glass, and support laundry and electrical equipment upkeep
  • Grounds Care: Cut grass, rake leaves, pick up litter, and operate lawn care equipment under supervision
  • Weather Response: Shovel snow from walks, parking lots, fire exits, and other required areas

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Your schedule may change based on operational needs.

  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience in laboring work including the use of tools and equipment used in maintenance or construction; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Conditions of Employment:

  • You must be in possession of a valid PA non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent.

Other Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:

  • A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Older Adult Protective Services Act.
  • Under the Act, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to, PA State Police and FBI clearance.
