OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe, well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve the mission, HPARD is seeking a Semi-Skilled Laborer for our Light Construction, Heavy Construction, and Carpentry Team.
Carpentry
This individual will perform basic maintenance and repairs to structures, facilities, and equipment, i.e., housekeeping activities, fabrication and installations, routine cleaning and servicing of vehicles, and cement mixing and preparation. Operate power and hand tool equipment. Perform painting, roofing, and carpentry activities. May operate vehicles to and from work locations. Monitor inventory control. Perform additional miscellaneous assignments as required.
Light Construction
This individual will perform basic maintenance and repairs to structures, facilities, and equipment, i.e., housekeeping activities, fabrication and installations, routine cleaning and servicing of vehicles, and cement mixing and preparation. Operate power and hand tool equipment. Will assist Light Construction shop with general laborer duties. Perform painting, roofing, and carpentry activities. May operate vehicles to and from work locations. Monitor inventory control. Carpentry
Heavy Construction
This individual will perform basic maintenance and repairs to structural trail work, installation of bollards, barricades, and car stops. Operate small equipment such as chain saws, mason saws, jackhammers, drills, gasoline tampers, and other hand tool equipment. May work with different types of materials (such as Granite, Mill Asphalt, Field Dirt, etc.). May operate vehicles to and from work locations. Monitor inventory control. Perform additional miscellaneous assignments as required.
This position is designated among essential personnel under the City's Emergency Management Policy.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position requires extensive, near-continuous physical exertion such as repeated lifting of very heavy objects (more than 80 pounds), deep bending, climbing steps and/or assuming awkward positions. There are routine exposures to extreme weather conditions such as heat/cold, moisture and air pollution. Periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instruction as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling. No special knowledge of any subject area or technical field is required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six (6) months of working experience are required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
