The Culture, Archaeology and Socio-Ecological Dynamics research group at the Department of Humanities of Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona, Spain) is seeking motivated candidates with a strong academic record to pursue a PhD in archaeobotany, focusing on the study of plant microremains such as phytoliths and starch from archaeological contexts.
The group offers an active and collaborative research environment, with ongoing projects in South America, South Asia, and other regions. Candidates will be supported in applying for competitive predoctoral funding opportunities at the national and international levels, depending on their profile and the calls available.
Due to the high level of competition for predoctoral funding, candidates must have a minimum combined average grade of 8.5 out of 10 across the degree(s) qualifying them for doctoral studies at Pompeu Fabra University. Admission requirements for the PhD program can be found at https://www.upf.edu/web/doctorats/historia. Candidates who obtained their degree(s) outside Spain must complete an equivalence process to convert their grades to the Spanish grading scale using the following free online service: https://universidades.sede.gob.es/pagina/index/directorio/Equivalencia_notas_medias.
Interested candidates are invited to contact marco.madella@upf.edu and javier.ruiz@upf.edu to discuss potential PhD topics, research lines, and the application process.
Please submit your expression of interest by October 30, 2026, including a cover letter (max. 1 page), a CV (max. 2 pages), and an academic transcript or summary of grades. Candidates who obtained their degree(s) outside Spain must also include a copy of the official grade equivalence.
