Position Overview

The Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery is seeking to hire a Security Officer for the Chicago-Read Mental Health Center located in Chicago, Illinois to perform routine security checks of the hospital on an assigned shift. These include but is not limited to patrolling grounds and buildings, verifying the safety and security of staff, patients, visitors and property, rotating various assignments which include dispatching foot patrol, property room, on-call, 1:1 assignments, assisting nursing staff by responding to emergency calls for restraints. Other duties include verifying visitors are properly identified by badges, assisting staff in administering restraint orders and acting as liaisons with Chicago Police Department as wells as assisting with OIG and other investigations.

Essential Functions

• Performs routine security checks of the hospital on an assigned shift, which includes but is not limited to patrolling grounds and buildings, verifying the safety and security of staff, patients, visitors, and property.
• Assists nursing staff by responding to emergency calls for restraints.
• Transports/drives, using state operated vehicle, and/or escorts patients from unit to court and back to unit, to other facilities or escorts patients internally to different locations.
• As part of the admissions process, assists nursing staff with searching patients for contraband, processes patient’s personal property for safekeeping, logs items and confirms deposits are made to the Trust Fund.
• Serves as dispatcher.
• Checks identification badges of all hospital employees and identification of visitors entering the facility.
• Participates in all Department of Human Services (DHS) and Chicago-Read Mental Health Center mandatory training.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.

*Qualifying state employees in the Upward Mobility Program shall have the stated requirements of this classification waived by successful completion of specific proficiency tests and training programs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) years of experience working with security requirements and regulations for a public or private organization.
• Two (2) years of experience in the use of security enforcement practices and techniques.
• Two (2) years of experience working with emergency response procedures including fire safety and controls for a public or private organization.
• Two (2) years of experience providing initial responses to security breaches and safety hazards.

Conditions of Employment

• Requires the ability to climb stairs, chase runaways, and physically restrain and control individuals as necessary to prevent injury to individual or others.
• Requires the ability to acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
• Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends and holidays.
• Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
• Requires the ability to travel in the performance of job duties.
• Requires an appropriate, valid driver’s license.
• Requires the ability to work in a 24 hour “on-call” capacity.
• Requires the ability to become OIG rule 50.3 certified within 90 days of employment.
• Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
• Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
