Job Description

Position Summary

The Security Officer I is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and peaceful environment for patients, visitors, and employees, and for protecting hospital buildings, assets, and premises as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.

  • Protect staff, patients, and visitors from violent encounters involving irate patients, visitors, or staff
  • Patrol hospital buildings and grounds to prevent fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry
  • Check cars for parking authorization decal and determine if vehicles are parked in restricted areas, such as near fire hydrants or in driveways, ambulance entrance, or reserved parking areas/spaces and write parking violations as appropriate
  • Periodically tour buildings and grounds, examining doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure and have not been tampered with.
  • Question unauthorized persons and route or detain them
  • Telephone Chesapeake Police Department for assistance as needed (911 or 382-6161)
  • Report any unsafe conditions, including malfunctions of heating, plumbing, or electrical systems, to the Facilities staff, on weekends and holidays contact the Nursing Supervisor
  • Maintain constant contact with the PBX operator and other Security staff via portable radio
  • Write and complete case reports regarding incidents that occur on CRMC property when necessary
  • Respond to all alarms and requests for services, investigating disturbances in a timely manner
  • Diffuse crisis situations utilizing a variety of communication and security techniques on patients, visitors, and staff who exhibit extreme or atypical behavior
  • Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services
  • Demonstrate a commitment to a flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care

Reporting Structure

  • Reports to: Lead Security Officer, may also receive direction from the Operations Manager or Director of Security
  • Supervises: None
  • Responsibilities: Not Applicable

  • Minimum Required Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred Education: Not applicable
  • Experience: Must have one (1) or more years’ prior experience as a Law Enforcement Officer, Deputy Sheriff, Military Service, or Security Officer
