Security Officer is responsible for maintaining security measures inside and around county facilities, and provide protection for visitors, employees, and county property.

Examples of duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Control and monitor entry and exit points at secured county facilities
  • Operate security screening equipment such as X-ray machines, walk-thru metal detectors, and hand held metal detection devices.
  • Conduct visual and physical inspection of carried items to prevent contraband and potential weapons from entering the secure area.
  • Must be consistently on alert for any breach of security or safety concerns, and respond accordingly to safe guard visitors, employees, and county property.
  • Must be able to explain security regulations to the public, and provide direction in a courteous manner during normal operations, and during emergency situations.
  • Will operate county vehicles in a safe manner, and provide transport of items or individuals as required.
  • Patrols assigned areas to prevent criminal activity and addresses safety concerns such as fires, hazardous conditions, unusual occurrences, traffic control, crowd control, and enforce parking regulations.
  • Write reports of daily activities and irregularities such as thefts, property damage, injury accidents, seizure of contraband or weapons, notification of outside authorities, or unusual occurrences.
  • Notify Police, Ambulance, Sheriff, or Fire departments in cases of emergency.
  • Responds to alarms and dispatched calls to investigate disturbances and unusual situations takes appropriate actions based on the situation, facts known, and position limitations.
  • Ability to work for extended periods under adverse weather conditions.
  • Performs associated tasks as instructed by the Director of Security or his designees.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Basic security and fire protection procedures
  • Basic computer skills
  • Conflict resolution


Skills in:

  • Verbal and written communication
  • Observing situations, and decision makings
  • Dealing courteously with the public


Ability to:

  • Ability to work varied schedule including evenings, holidays and weekend work
  • Ability to handle dangerous or potentially dangerous persons, animals, and equipment
  • Meet physical demands as described below:
    1. Extensive walking, frequent standing, use of hands
    2. Frequent talking, good hearing
    3. Use of hands and reach with arms and/or hands
    4. Lift and/or move up to 25lbs
    5. Specific vision abilities are require
  • Ability to prepare and submit reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to transform information accurately from one source to another.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgements during the performance of their duties.
  • Ability to maintain firearms qualification as required by the Sheriff.
  • Ability to maintain PA ACT 235 certification.
  • Ability to perform within prescribed office procedures and practices and knowledge of operation relevant to equipment.
  • Knowledge of Pennsylvania Criminal and Procedural Law.

Supplemental information

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Possess of a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License with an acceptable driving history
  • One year experience in Police or Security field or any combination of experience/ and or education
  • Must possess valid PA ACT 235 (Lethal Weapon Training Act) Certification
