Job Description

Amref Health Africa (Amref) was founded in 1957 and has since grown to become the largest African-based international health development organisation; currently implementing more than 180 programmes, reaching more than 40 million people across 35 African countries; and a staff complement of over 2,000. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, Amref Health Africa has offices in ten countries in Africa – Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Guinea (Conakry), Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. An additional eleven advocacy and fundraising offices are in Europe and North America.

The Security Guard, working under the supervision of the Safety and Security Officer, holds a crucial position within the organization. Their primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and protection of the company's property, employees, and visitors at all times. This role is essential for maintaining a secure environment and preventing any potential threats or incidents. Each day, the Security Guard undertakes various tasks that contribute to the overall safety of the workplace. In addition to monitoring access, Security Guards are also responsible for patrolling the premises regularly, responding to emergencies, maintaining a detailed log of daily activities is also a key responsibility. The Security Guard documents all incidents, visitor entries, and any irregularities observed during their shift. This record-keeping is important for future reference and can aid in investigations if necessary. It also helps the Safety and Security Officer evaluate the overall security situation and identify areas for improvement.

  1. Roles and responsibilities
  • Patrolling and monitoring activities on the Amref’s premises regularly to discourage criminals and ensure the environment is safe and secure
  • Controlling access by checking ID cards and car permits or other relevant documents for proper identification of all persons entering the premises and ensuring that unauthorized persons and vehicles do not enter the premises;
  • Ensuring the visitors ID is valid, issue a visitor badge that must be worn by the visitor while they are inside the facility. Upon the visitor's departure from the office, the guards ensure a smooth exit by retrieving the visitor badge and returning the ID card to the individual.
  • Makes regular inspection of the grounds and buildings to identify any security risks and exposure as well as violations of security rules and regulations; controls the flow of traffic and enforces parking regulations on the premises
  • Recording all necessary events on the event record and providing detailed reports on daily activities and any incidents that may have occurred to the safety and security officer
  • Ensures that all firefighting equipment are in their locations and precautionary signs and notices are not removed
  • Traffic and parking management in the compound of the Amref office
  • Provide the safety and security officer with a comprehensive report on the concerns and activities related to safety and security during the shift.
  • Ensure that all properties owned by Amref receive proper passes before they exit the Amref office.
  • Properly recording the Generator log-sheet

Qualifications

Educational background

  • A high school diploma or equivalent and additional security, police, or military training is required

Experience

  • At least one year’s experience in a similar role in the field including police and military organizations
  • Familiarity with safety and security policies and procedures

Skills

  • Basic knowledge of MS Office and computer tools used by Amref
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills when dealing with customers, stakeholders, and other visitors to the premises
  • Report writing
  • Problem-solving skills

Additional requirements

  • Good knowledge of security protocols environment and humanitarian principles.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently.
  • Keen and observant eye to ensure any suspicious activity does not go unnoticed Great physical strength and agility.
  • Availability to respond to security alerts outside of business hours
  • Focuses on results for the client and responds positively to feedback
  • Consistently approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude
  • A team player, who remains calm, confident, in control, and good-humored even under pressure
  • Maintains a non-partisan approach as an enabler to support all staff and operations.
  • Ability to operate emergency equipment and intruder detection systems

Language Skills

  • Good level of written and spoken English and Amharic –in addition, Local language is required for security guards at regional offices
