Job Description: Senior Venafi PKI Engineer

Job Summary-

We are seeking an experienced Senior Venafi PKI Engineer to lead the administration, automation, governance, and lifecycle management of enterprise digital certificates using the Venafi Platform. The role will be responsible for maintaining a Zero-Touch PKI framework, ensuring automated certificate discovery, issuance, renewal, revocation, and compliance across on-premise, cloud, and hybrid environments.

The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in Venafi TLS Protect, Enterprise PKI, Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS), certificate lifecycle automation, machine identity management, and security governance. This role will work closely with Cybersecurity, Infrastructure, Cloud, DevOps, Application, and Network teams to secure machine identities and eliminate certificate-related outages through automation.

Key Responsibilities

Venafi Platform Administration-

• Administer, configure, and maintain the Venafi platform across enterprise environments.
• Manage Venafi TLS Protect, Trust Protection Platform (TPP), and machine identity management solutions.
• Ensure platform availability, performance, scalability, and operational stability.
• Perform platform upgrades, patch management, and health monitoring activities.
• Manage Venafi administrative functions, policies, workflows, and RBAC controls.

Zero-Touch Certificate Lifecycle Management-

• Support and Maintenance of Zero-Touch certificate lifecycle management processes.
• Automate certificate discovery, enrollment, issuance, renewal, installation, and revocation.
• Ensure proactive replacement of expiring certificates with minimal manual intervention.
• Manage certificate inventories across enterprise applications, servers, databases, load balancers, and cloud workloads.
• Eliminate certificate-related service outages through automation and governance controls.

Enterprise PKI Management

• Integrate and manage enterprise PKI environments including:

o Microsoft Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS)

o Public Certificate Authorities

o Internal Certificate Authorities

o Cloud-based Certificate Services

• Manage root CA and subordinate CA integrations.
• Maintain certificate trust chains and PKI security standards.
• Provide technical oversight for certificate authority architecture and governance.

Machine Identity Management

• Manage machine identities across:

o Windows Servers

o Linux Servers

o Cloud Platforms

o Containers

o Kubernetes Clusters

o Network Devices

o Load Balancers

o Web Servers

• Establish and maintain enterprise machine identity governance practices.
• Discovery and monitoring of unmanaged certificates.

Security & Compliance

• Define and enforce certificate security policies and governance standards.
• Support audit, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
• Perform certificate risk assessments and remediation activities.
• Identify weak, expired, or non-compliant certificates and implement corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with enterprise security standards and PKI best practices.

Integration & Automation

• Integrate Venafi with:

o Active Directory

o ServiceNow

o CyberArk/BeyondTrust

o SIEM Platforms

o DevOps Pipelines

o Cloud Security Platforms

o Kubernetes and Container Platforms

• Develop and maintain automation using:

o PowerShell

o REST APIs

o Python

o Venafi SDKs

• Drive Infrastructure-as-Code and certificate automation initiatives.

Incident, Change & Problem Management

• Manage critical incidents related to certificate services and PKI infrastructure.
• Support Change, Incident, Service Request, and Problem Management processes.
• Conduct root cause analysis on certificate-related outages.
• Ensure timely resolution of operational issues within agreed SLAs.

Monitoring & Operational Support

• Perform daily platform health checks.
• Monitor certificate expiry alerts, policy violations, and platform alarms.
• Manage dashboards, reporting, and operational metrics.
• Coordinate with infrastructure, network, cloud, and application teams during incident resolution.

Reporting & Governance

• Prepare executive and operational reports covering:

o Certificate inventory

o Compliance status

o Expiring certificates

o Platform utilization

o Risk exposure

o Service performance

• Present PKI governance metrics to security leadership and stakeholders.
• Develop PKI roadmaps and automation strategies.

Documentation & Continuous Improvement-

• Maintain architecture documents, SOPs, runbooks, and operational procedures.
• Lead service improvement and certificate automation initiatives.
• Identify process inefficiencies and recommend platform enhancements.
• Provide technical mentoring and guidance to junior engineers.

Required Skills & Experience

Core Technical Skills-

• Strong hands-on experience with Venafi TLS Protect / Trust Protection Platform (TPP).
• Expertise in Zero-Touch Certificate Lifecycle Management.
• Extensive experience with:

o Enterprise PKI

o Certificate Authorities (CA)

o SSL/TLS Certificates

o Machine Identity Management

o Certificate Automation

o Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS)

• Experience managing large-scale certificate environments with thousands of certificates.

Infrastructure & Security-

• Strong knowledge of:

o Microsoft Active Directory

o Windows Server

o DNS

o Load Balancers (F5, Netscaler)

o Web Servers (IIS, Apache, NGINX)

o Cloud Platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP)

o Kubernetes and Container Security

• Understanding of cryptography, certificate trust chains, OCSP, CRL, and HSM concepts.

Automation Skills-

• PowerShell scripting.
• Python scripting.
• REST API integration.
• DevOps and CI/CD integration.
• Certificate deployment automation.

IT Service Management-

• Experience in Incident, Change, Problem, and Request Management.
• Familiarity with ITIL Service Management practices.
