Job Description
TekPro Support Services, LLC (TSS) is seeking a Secondary Screener to support secondary mail and package screening operations at the Cheverly Logistics Center (CLC), Maryland. This hands-on technical position is responsible for screening, inspection, package accountability, documentation, and chain-of-custody activities in accordance with approved procedures.
The Secondary Screener supports the safe, secure, and accountable processing of mail, packages, and other designated materials before release into normal distribution. This position has no management or supervisory responsibilities and reports to the Technical Lead – Mail & Secondary Screening/CLC Supervisor.
What You’ll Do
- Perform secondary screening of mail and packages in accordance with approved procedures.
- Conduct required exterior visual inspections before further processing.
- Operate authorized screening equipment following required training and qualification.
- Maintain proper separation of unscreened, screened/cleared, held, suspicious or incident-controlled, and specially controlled materials.
- Verify package identity, tracking information, recipient, destination, and condition.
- Maintain package accountability throughout screening and processing.
- Accurately complete required Pitney Bowes SendPro transactions and chain-of-custody actions.
- Apply required inspection labels or markings following successful screening.
- Reassemble and reseal inspected packages as required.
- Transfer screened packages only to authorized custody points.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and controlled screening workspace and follow required PPE and hygiene practices.
- Immediately report equipment alarms, warning conditions, damage, or abnormal operation.
- Assist with package-count reconciliation and custody verification.
- Document holds, damaged or missing packages, and other exceptions.
- Follow approved procedures for Director, executive-level, priority, or other specially controlled material.
- Participate in required classroom training, on-the-job training (OJT), refresher training, and qualification activities.
- Perform authorized screening activities that may include X-ray screening, controlled mail opening and inspection, biological screening, RF/RFID screening, radiation-screening awareness, and inspection of package contents and packaging layers.
- Follow established suspicious or potentially hazardous mail procedures, including stopping normal processing, limiting unnecessary handling, preserving tracking and custody information, and immediately escalating concerns to appropriate personnel.
- Operate or support authorized screening and mail-processing equipment after completing required training and qualification.
What You Bring:
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow detailed SOPs and work instructions.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain accurate package and custody records.
- Ability to recognize abnormal package conditions and immediately escalate concerns.
- Ability to use computers, handheld scanners, and electronic tracking systems.
- Ability to follow technical instructions and equipment operating procedures.
- Ability to work effectively in a structured, process-driven environment.
- Ability to communicate clearly with coworkers, technical leads, supervisors, and Government personnel.
- Ability to remain calm and follow procedures during unusual or emergency conditions.
- Ability to possess and maintain a Top Secret (TS) security clearance.
Preferred:
- One to three (1–3) years of relevant experience in mailroom operations, shipping/receiving, logistics, warehouse operations, security screening, or a related operational environment.
- Previous mailroom or package-processing experience.
- Previous shipping and receiving experience.
- Experience in a Federal Government logistics or mailroom environment.
- Experience with secondary mail or package screening.
- Experience with Smiths Detection BioFlash® MailGuard® or BioFlash® Biological Identifier.
- Experience using a Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC).
- Experience operating or supporting X-ray screening equipment.
- Experience using hand RF scanners for RF/RFID detection.
- Familiarity with radiation pager/detection equipment.
- Experience with Pitney Bowes SendPro 360 or a comparable package-tracking system.
- Familiarity with suspicious-mail procedures.
- Experience maintaining accountable mail or chain-of-custody records.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent handling of mail, boxes, and packages.
- Ability to perform bending, reaching, and repetitive handling activities.
- Ability to wear required PPE.
- Ability to work in controlled mailroom, warehouse, loading-dock, or screening environments.
- Ability to work around specialized screening and material-handling equipment.
- Ability to maintain attention to detail during repetitive screening activities.
- Ability to support periods of increased package or mail volume.
