Job Description

Works under the supervision of the Street Superintendent and the Public Works Director and at times under the supervision of an Equipment Operator, Truck Driver, Skilled Laborer, or Laborer as specified by the Street Superintendent and the Public Works Director and is reviewed for compliance with established procedure while working, and through review after task completion. Tasks may include mowing grass, loading brush and weeds on trucks, picking up litter, painting curbs and guard rails, cleaning city vehicles, building maintenance and administrative work.

Employment Status: Seasonal - Part-time - Non-Exempt
Schedule: Monday-Thursday 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Compensation: $13.00/hour

Essential Duties - Knowledge - Skills - Abilities
• Performs various labor tasks required to maintain and repair city streets (i.e., shoveling materials, loading/unloading trucks, and operating handheld power tools)
• Cleans street ditches, culverts, sidewalks, and curbs of leaves, garbage, trees, tree limbs, and other debris using shovels, leaf blowers, rakes, and brooms.
• Mow grass, cut brush, and trim shrubs.
• Cleans equipment and tools used during the workday.
• Cleaning bathrooms, removing trash, cleaning offices and vehicles, cleaning windows. Any and all basic custodial duties as directed by the Street Superintendent.
• May be asked to perform office duties including typing, filing, etc.
• May be asked to perform building maintenance duties.
• May be asked to shadow a fleet mechanic.
• Promotes an image of professional, courteous service as a representative of the City of Morgantown. Employee encounters occasional contact with other departments and general public.
• Performs duties as assigned by Public Works Director or Street Superintendent orally or writing in a timely fashion.
• Wears all PPE required and follows all safety policies.
• Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
• Employee spends a majority of work shift using equipment and performing tasks requiring repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, or crawling. Occasional activities require working from elevated workspaces. Daily operations require unaided lifting of objects weighing as much as fifty-one pounds.
• Employee spends most of the work shift outdoors or in a truck. Daily conditions encountered odors, fumes, dust, dirt, noises, and vibration. Other conditions vary with precipitation and seasonal changes.

Hazardous conditions encountered daily include, but are not limited to:
• Occasional hazards: Tripping or slipping due to terrain and weather conditions, traffic accidents when working to remove snow and ice, and earth or brick cave-ins when laying pipe or working in manholes or drops.
• Possible hazards: Contact with extremely hazardous or toxic waste, sharps/needles and other debris when making deliveries of trash to the landfill, hazards associated with working around large vehicles on narrow roads and steep grades and various weather conditions.

Use of Technology & Equipment

• The position has daily use of light equipment such as push mowers, weed whackers, custodial equipment, leaf blowers, shovels, rakes, brooms, etc.
• Equipment used on a regular basis includes but is not limited to multi-line telephone system, computer, printer, copier, fax machines.

Contact & Supervision

• Position involves frequent internal and external contact.
• This position does not supervise any employees.
• Reports to the Street Superintendent, Deputy Director of Engineering & Public Works, and Director of Engineering & Public Works.
