Job Description

Under the general direction of the Quality and Operations Manager, the incumbent is responsible for performing routine grounds work including care and maintenance of lawn, exterior plants, trees, shrubs; landscaping; utilizing appropriate pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers; and performing a variety of related duties.

Qualifications

  • Education/Certification:
    • Complete Grade 12 education
  • Experience:
    • Minimum two (2) years of related experience required
  • Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
    • Thorough knowledge of commercial landscape gardening and grounds maintenance practices
    • Knowledge of different types of trees, shrubs, plants, lawns and their production and care
    • Knowledge of herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers and their uses
    • Ability to operate lawn tractors and grass cutting equipment
    • Knowledge of WHMIS and safety standards
    • Flexibility in responding to changing work demands

Other Requirements and Conditions of Employment:

  • May be required to respond to emergencies evenings, weekends, and holidays

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs routine grounds work (cutting grass, planting and watering flowers and shrubs, etc.)
  • Operates power equipment to ensure the regular maintenance of Eden Mental Health Centre grounds.
  • Acts as a resource person for labourers assisting with grounds work; providing advice and assistance and recommending appropriate actions.
  • Inspects work performed by labourers to ensure it is completed to standards.
  • In conjunction with the manager, prepares schedule of daily work activities and prioritizes urgent tasks.
  • Ensures that the grounds comply with all safety regulations.
  • Removes garbage and general rubbish deposited within the grounds.
  • Ensures that all materials, tools, and equipment are properly and safely maintained and stored.
  • Assists in all aspects of the preventative maintenance program to maintain building, grounds, equipment, furnishings, and utilities in a safe, sanitary and attractive condition. This includes but is not limited to the preventative maintenance program and maintenance/repairs, seasonal grounds keeping duties, and assisting with renovations as needed at all Eden facilities.
  • Assists with safety, fire control, security, and disaster plans, as required by supervisor. This includes but is not limited to the operation of the fire alarm system, care of fire extinguishers, and monitoring the operation the standby generator.

Secondary Duties:

  • Reports any mechanical failures or negative conditions to the supervisor
  • Assists with audits
  • Other duties as assigned or required
