As a Grounds & Facilities Maintenance Technician, your work helps ensure our campus remains safe, beautiful, functional, and welcoming year-round. From landscaping and exterior maintenance to emergency response and facilities support, your contributions directly support residents’ quality of life while strengthening a collaborative Facilities team.

What You Will Do

  • Provide full-spectrum groundskeeping, landscaping, and exterior maintenance support across the Kendal at Lexington campus
  • Perform mowing, trimming, pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and general campus beautification tasks
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions to maintain campus appearance and sustainability
  • Serve as a primary responder for inclement weather duties including snow and ice removal, salting, flood preparation, and emergency weather response
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies and adjusted schedules related to weather events and operational needs
  • Support Facilities Services work in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, locksmithing/security, equipment maintenance, and related trades
  • Perform preventative maintenance assignments in a timely manner
  • Properly document work orders, completed tasks, and service records
  • Secure and store tools and equipment appropriately when not in use
  • Complete incident, accident, and service reports as needed
  • Assist with moving residents, equipment, furniture, and event setup or tear down
  • Coordinate maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment
  • Respond to infrastructure issues including water leaks and sewer backups
  • Perform post-construction or rough cleaning following repairs, renovations, or construction projects
  • Collect and dispose of exterior trash and recycling for the Anderson Center, North and South Apartment Buildings, Borden Center, Sunnyside exterior areas, cottages, and campus collection sites
  • Perform weekly trash, recycling, and dog waste receptacle pickup across campus
  • Clean the interior of Kendal vehicles assigned to Facilities Services – Maintenance
  • Replenish gasoline in all Kendal vehicles
  • Follow all safe work procedures including proper use of gloves, masks, hearing protection, eyewear, and other PPE
  • Utilize cones, barricades, caution signs, reflective vests, and other safety measures to protect residents, visitors, and staff
  • Report unusual or suspicious conditions or behaviors promptly
  • Assist with special projects and perform other related duties as assigned
  • Work collaboratively with team members while also performing tasks independently as needed
  • Demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, and respect when working with residents, families, and staff

What You Bring

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license with a clean driving record and reliable transportation
  • Ability to properly wear and use designated personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to safely operate mowers, tractors, chainsaws, and other maintenance equipment
  • Proficiency in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Willingness to perform cross-trade and miscellaneous support work across the Facilities team
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with residents while exercising good judgment and initiative
  • Comfort working with an older adult population while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism
  • A dependable, safety-focused, and service-oriented attitude

  • Ability to walk long distances across campus and work in various indoor and outdoor environments
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions year-round
  • Ability to stand, bend, reach, climb, kneel, and work on feet for extended periods
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry heavy equipment, materials, and supplies
  • Ability to safely operate maintenance tools, landscaping equipment, and machinery
