Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

Aquila Mine has an exciting opportunity for a Seam Gas Coordinator to join the team, based in Middlemount. You will play a key role in managing and implementing the short- and medium-term surface gas drainage strategy for the mine.

Reporting to the Tech Services (Vent & Gas) Superintendent, you will be responsible for planning and maintaining the seam gas drainage processes, while coordinating ancillary surface operation activities that is consistent with delivering the operational requirements of the mine. In addition, you will ensure all activities undertaken are in line with statutory requirements and Anglo American standards.

The Seam Gas Coordinator role will see you responsible for:

  • Coordinate surface seam gas drainage activities and resources
  • Provide the production areas with a safe and productive environment to ensure operational targets are met
  • Provide planning services and technical advice on how to optimise the value of the mine’s resources
  • Work with the Seam Gas Department to optimise SIS gas drainage designs to meet underground production requirements
  • Continually reviewing borehole (SIS, UIS) performance to ensure drainage is in line with predicted performance
  • Encourage the consistent application of surface gas drainage standards across the site with a focus on internal knowledge transfer
  • Develop and communicate the twenty-four-hour plan by collaborating with the seam gas team
  • Communicate with multiple stakeholders and develop recommended solutions for specific issues
  • Document and assist in the development of the weekly plan for Seam Gas Drainage and associated activities

Qualifications

  • S1, S2, S3 and G2 qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership in the field of Seam Gas Operations
  • Experience delivering best practice with regards to seam gas activities at an underground coal mine, with a particular focus on safety and risk management.
  • Ability to understand functionality of business systems and provide relevant data for business purposes
  • Knowledge of relevant mining legislation and its application.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills to influence and achieve buy-in from key stakeholders.
  • An intermediate level of strategic thinking, planning and problem solving ability
