Job Description

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.

The Translational Medicine OMNI Biomarker Development department at Genentech provides translational science support to inform the development of novel personalized therapeutics across disease areas including Ophthalmology, Metabolism, Neuroscience, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases (OMNI), spanning all stages of research and development. Our department is responsible for defining and executing biomarker strategies in clinical trials and leveraging human translational research to generate novel target and biomarker approaches.

Within Multiple Sclerosis (MS), we focus on integrating clinical and translational research to understand disease heterogeneity, target engagement, and mechanisms of disease progression. We leverage clinical trial data, human biospecimens, and advanced omics technologies to drive biomarker discovery and enable reverse translation, refining preclinical models and accelerating therapeutic development.

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Scientist III to join Genentech’s Translational Medicine team in South San Francisco. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and validate therapeutic targets and biomarkers, with a strong emphasis on leveraging human clinical data to inform disease biology and preclinical model systems. The role requires expertise in human-relevant in vitro models and translational approaches to bridge clinical insights with mechanistic understanding.

The Opportunity:

As an integral member of our dynamic team, you will:

  • Contribute to the discovery and validation of candidate targets and biomarkers by integrating clinical data with in vitro and ex vivo experimental systems.

  • Design and execute experiments using human-relevant model systems (e.g., primary immune cells, iPSC-derived CNS cells, co-cultures) to investigate disease-relevant pathways and mechanisms of action, including functional and molecular readouts.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to analyze and interpret high-dimensional datasets from clinical samples and experimental models, integrating multi-omics data to support translational research objectives.

  • Support biomarker research activities aligned with clinical development, including evaluation of pharmacodynamic and disease-relevant markers.

  • Communicate results to project teams and contribute to internal presentations and external scientific communications.

  • Work collaboratively across functions and contribute to external partnerships to advance translational research efforts.

Who You Are:

  • Hold a PhD in Immunology, Neuroscience, Neuroimmunology, Functional Genomics, or a related field, with a strong record of scientific achievement.

  • Have at least 3 years of relevant experience in neuroimmunology, translational research, or MS-related biology.

  • Possess experience with human-relevant model systems, such as primary immune cells, iPSC-derived models, organoids, or complex co-culture systems.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in a broad range of laboratory techniques, including cell culture, flow cytometry, ELISA, qPCR, cytokine profiling, NGS-based assays, and/or human whole blood assays.

  • Have familiarity with analysis and interpretation of high-dimensional datasets (e.g., bulk and single-cell omics such as scRNA-seq, CITE-seq, TCR-seq, or spatial transcriptomics).

  • Be able to independently design, execute, and interpret experiments in a lab-based setting with strong scientific rigor.

  • Exhibit strong written and oral communication skills, as evidenced by publications and/or internal and external presentations.

  • Demonstrate effective time management, organization, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Be collaborative, team-oriented, and comfortable working across functions and time zones in a global environment.
