Job Description

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Genentech!

The Opportunity

The CVRM (Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolism) Research Biology group within Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) is seeking a highly talented, motivated, and creative Scientist 3 to investigate novel pathways, targets, and therapeutic development in metabolic disease.

The Scientist 3 contributes to the early-stage cardiometabolic pipeline across multiple therapeutic modalities and disease areas, including obesity, cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic conditions. In this lab-based role, you will work independently and collaboratively to validate new targets and pathways, leveraging in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo skills. Reporting to a Senior Principal Scientist, you will engage in target discovery and mechanism-of-action studies while collaborating with cross-functional teams of scientists and clinicians to advance therapeutic development. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing CVRM biology group and make significant contributions to the early stage cardiometabolic pipeline, across multiple tissues and disease areas.

Key responsibilities:

  • Independent design, execution and interpretation of experiments; including brainstorming of next steps and troubleshooting

  • Willingness to mentor/cross-train colleagues

  • Ability to present research at intra- and inter-departmental meetings

  • Communicate findings through high-quality internal presentations, cross-functional forums, and external publications/conferences

  • Timely adherence to ELN

  • Contribute to and maintain a collaborative lab culture and safe environment

Who you are

  • Education: PhD in a life science discipline (e.g., cell biology, biochemistry) or a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree with equivalent industry experience.

  • Track Record: Demonstrated achievement through high-quality publications and a strong understanding of cardiovascular and metabolic disease biology.

  • Experimental Design: Skilled in independent, controlled experimental design and literature review to drive mechanism-of-action studies.

  • Cell Culture: Proficient in culturing mammalian cell lines and primary cells (cardiomyocytes, immune cells, organoids, etc.).

  • Molecular Methods: Experienced in cell line manipulation (e.g., CRISPR, shRNA, lentivirus) and characterization (e.g., qRT-PCR, RNAseq, Western Blot, ELISA).

  • Tissue Analysis: Capable of ex-vivo tissue isolation and downstream processing (e.g., protein/RNA isolation).

  • Assay Proficiency: Competent in plate-reader based assays, reporter assays, dose-response curve generation, and statistical analysis.

  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to present research in cross-functional forums.

Preferred Background and Skills:

  • Experience with imaging technologies (e.g., Incucyte, immunofluorescence), flow cytometry, and protein methods (e.g., IP).

  • Industry experience, familiarity with cardiovascular models, and experience or willingness to develop in vivo models.

Please note this a lab-based role at our South San Francisco, CA campus. Onsite presence is required.
