The Role

At QuidelOrtho, we’re advancing the power of diagnostics for a healthier future for all. Join our mission as our next Scientist I supporting cross functional teams, who are responsible for performing a wide variety of functions related to experimental design and analysis of testing utilizing appropriate statistical methodologies. Knowledge of material identification (antibodies and antigens) and protein characterization methods is highly desirable. Typical laboratory instrumentations include but are not limited to: Octet (Biolayer Interferometry), Biacore (Surface Plasmon Resonance), differential scanning fluorimetry (nanoDSF), HPLC, FTIR, SDS-PAGE and IEF gels. Understanding of other characterization tools, such as flow cytometry, and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry is a plus. Strong analytical skills in biophysical characterization and for understanding of protein–protein interactions are preferred.

This position is onsite full-time in Rochester, NY.

The Responsibilities

• Performs testing within established timelines to support raw material identification, characterization, and assay concepting of new in vitro diagnostic products and processes.
• Documents results clearly and accurately. Interprets data and draws conclusions. Readily discriminates between normal and abnormal variation. Presents data to functional project team.
• Maintains accurate records of work performed in accordance with Current Good Manufacture Process (cGMP)
• practices, established quality protocols and other standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Maintains analytical laboratory equipment related to testing, and performs necessary calibration, QC and documentation per SOPs.
• Participates in meetings and discussions, helps with ongoing investigations.
• Communicates with outside vendors and internal business partners
• Maintains a safe working environment through the proactive identification of hazards and risks.
• Works cooperatively with others to help a team or work group achieve its goals.
• Manages inventory.
• May provide training/ mentorship of new employees on covered jobs and answering job-related questions in one or more areas.
• Perform other work- related duties as assigned.

The Individual

Required:

• BS degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Analytical Chemistry, Medical Technology or related sciences field; equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of 1 year of relevant laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proficiency in Biomaterial characterization using SDS-PAGE, IEF, Western blotting.
• Familiarity with analytical techniques such as HPLC and label free binding (Octet and Biacore).
• Basic knowledge and experience in buffer formulation.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite of products.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge and experience with Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
• Knowledge and experience with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
• Basic understanding of laboratory skills, techniques and data analysis.
• Ability to carry out general biochemical laboratory procedures including handling of human blood/serum samples,and reagents for testing purposes.
• Knowledge of safe chemical and biological handling.
• Less than 10% domestic and/or international travel may be required.
• This position is not currently eligible for visa sponsorship.

Preferred:

• Experience with cell/tissue cultures
• Use of Microsoft Access
• Experience with FT-IR, ELISA plate reader, ITC, flow cytometry
• Management of cell banks

Internal Partners:

• Works within the R&D project team and has daily interaction for planning and execution of team activities. Cross functional collaboration with many departments and project team members. Meets with cross-functional team members to meet goals

External Partners:

• May interact with outside vendors for arrangement of service or calibration of test equipment or procurement of raw materials or test specimens.

The Work Environment

The work environment characteristics are representative of a manufacturing, laboratory, or warehouse environment and include handling of viral and bacterial hazards, potentially hazardous chemicals, as well as infectious or potentially infectious bodily fluids, tissues, and samples. Up to 75% of the time at desk, standing or sitting extended periods of time. Flexible work hours to meet project deadlines

Working Conditions

• Noise level: Laboratory sounds or a pitch that may cause distraction.
• Temperature: May have to perform testing in an environmental chamber (extreme heat, cold, and/or humidity) or work in walk-in refrigerators or freezers.
• Working around moving machinery
• Protective equipment required: gloves, lab coat, eyewear
• Exposures: Biological/biohazardous materials (including but not limited to human or animal blood and blood products, human urine, human CSF), chemical fumes, toxic chemicals, airborne particles, odors, or other unpleasant surroundings
• Other factors: Possible overtime

Salary Transparency

The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. At QuidelOrtho, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The salary range for this position is $28/hour to $32/hour and is bonus eligible.
