The opportunity: Innovation is at the core of Hitachi Energy, and our research centers are the backbone of our technology development. For our research center in Bangalore, India, we are looking for an R&D Scientist with expertise in power system protection, with special focus towards new protection philosophy and algorithm development for inverter-based resource rich power systems. In this role, you will work in highly skilled, collaborative teams contributing to technologies that enable a more sustainable and resilient energy system. You will drive impact by executing innovative research in power system protection, fault location, WAMPAC applications and automation, collaborating across global internal and external ecosystems, and knowledge dissemination via publications, patents, and reports.
How you’ll make an impact:
• Identify technology gaps that address present and future business needs. • Create ideas and proposals for R&D projects aligned with business needs and future commercial potential
• Propose, contribute to and lead projects in power systems protection, control, substation automation, WAMPAC applications and related fields.
• Manage R&D projects or work packages with a structured approach, clear targets, and effective technical leadership
• Collaborate with a global team and network in the company to identify, solve real-world challenges for our customers and actively distribute your knowledge and expertise
• Collaborate with external partners including universities, startups and vendors
• Disseminate your results in scientific publications, patent applications, technical reports and presentations
• Build a strong internal network and actively share knowledge and expertise across the organization
Your background:
• PhD degree in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Power Systems or power system protection, or in a related field.
• Sound academic grounding in power system protection, power electronics and converter behaviour, power electronics applied to power systems, transient analysis/EMT studies
• Theoretical background demonstrated through publications in reputable journals and conferences is preferred.
• Extensive experience in power systems simulation and control is required.
• Proficient in one or more commonly used power systems simulation platforms like PSCAD, PSS/E, DigSilent PowerFactory, Opal-RT, etc.
• Basic scripting skills in common programming languages like Python/MATLAB/C/ C++ is an advantage.
• Good written, verbal communication and presentation skills in English is required.
• Essential attitudes to have - team player, proactive, enterprising, ownership, creativity and innovation capability.
• Knowledge of standards and protocols related to power system protection, substation automation and communication (e.g., IEC 61850 (GOOSE and SV), DNP3, PMU protocols, etc.) is preferred.
• Hands-on experience with hardware-in-loop (HIL) systems such as RTDS, OPAL-RT is beneficial.
