The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.
The Science IT and Environmental Data group, part of the FOREMA research unit, aims to provide state-of-the-art, in-house Science IT technology consulting to empower WSL scientists in pushing the boundaries of modern environmental research. By appointment, the WSL offers a tenure-track position as a
Become part of a small and passionate group in charge of building state-of-the-art Science IT capabilities at WSL. We offer you the opportunity to shape the future of Science IT at WSL and give you ample room to innovate. In this Science IT role, you will develop and manage the access to internal or external science-oriented high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructures, including especially user support, usage guidelines, and user training. You will be supporting and empowering our environmental scientists in accessing and responsibly using both internal and external HPC resources and provide technical consulting on the optimization and development of HPC applications. With documentation and tutorials, you will build scientists’ know-how and promote standardized approaches for the efficient use of HPC clusters. You will also provide recommendations for virtualization and cloud computing, including project‑specific consultation. Finally, you will initiate and coordinate the internal collaboration, networking and knowledge exchange among HPC and Science IT users.
You possess a completed degree in IT, software engineering or a scientific field (or comparable education and skills) with a minimum of two years of experience. Strong skills in HPC environment configuration, HPC application development, Linux Package installation and software management, containerization, and automatic data pipelines are expected. The ideal profile is rounded up by experience in the technical implementation of HPC-related software engineering projects, including code optimization, parallelization (MPI), GPU-programming and DevOps. You enjoy collaborating closely with researchers, and you are a communicative, reliable, and team-oriented person with excellent English skills.
Please send your complete application, including a motivation letter, to Beatrice Lamprecht, Human Resources WSL, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL provides science-based solutions for forests, landscapes, biodiversity, natural hazards, and snow and ice in a changing world. As a federal research institute and part of the ETH Domain, WSL commits itself to excellence in research and implementation that benefits nature and society.
As the leading Swiss research institute for terrestrial environmental systems, WSL performs outstanding research at the national and inter- national levels that benefits the environment and society in Switzerland and beyond. We address global challenges driven by land use change, climate change, biodiversity loss, altered bio- geochemical cycles, and urbanisation, as well as their interactions. WSL is thus in a position to develop science-based solutions for sustainable approaches that serve both the environment and society. We accomplish this together with partners from research, practice and the public, to effectively support environmental decision-making and governance. To train the next generations of decision-makers, we engage in teaching and continuing education in the field of terrestrial environmental science. Through its activities and engagement with society, WSL bridges the science-policy gap and contributes to a future rooted in sustainability.
