Job Description

THIS IS A PART-TIME POSITION OF 15 HOURS PER WEEK.

This is a provisional appointment.

Under the direction of the Community Service Officer, the School Traffic Supervisor will perform seasonal work in connection with regulating vehicular traffic at intersections and crosswalks throughout the City.

Responsibilities

  • Regulating vehicular traffic at various intersections and crosswalks in the vicinity of elementary schools in order to permit school children to cross the street safely when going to or returning from school.
  • Protecting children by keeping them from entering and crossing the street until traffic has been halted and reporting violations of motorists who fail to stop when directed to do so.
  • Performing related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  • All applicants must speak the English language, understand and follow oral and written instructions, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Applicants must also be able to walk/stand for extended periods of time without an assistive device.
  • Must be able to perform overhead activities that require the use of their arms.
  • When required, must be able to run and respond rapidly to assist children; intermittently bend, squat, kneel, twist, and reach without an assistive device; distinguish colors; hear adequately at high levels of background noise; and lift or carry the weight of ten (10) pounds or less.
  • Must be fully alert and able to respond promptly in potentially hazardous situations.
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment when responding to children's inquiries and their needs.
  • All School Traffic Supervisors will be trained by the Community Service Officer(s) in Massachusetts traffic laws related to traffic control, pedestrians right of way, school zones, and related laws.
  • Applicants will have hearing and vision tests and must score adequately.
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
