A Brief Overview

The School Nurse promotes student health and safety by providing clinical care, managing chronic conditions, responding to emergencies, and supporting the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of students. The nurse serves as a key liaison among students, families, school staff, and health care providers. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates professional nursing care to the student population in accordance with pediatric nursing standards and school policies and procedures. Care may be coordinated and delegated as appropriate to school personnel.

Essential Functions

  • Assessment & Evaluation

    *Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of school nursing practice within appropriate time frames and according to defined professional standards.

    *Collects, documents, and analyzes data related to students’ physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs.

    *Demonstrates age-specific competency in student assessment, including knowledge of growth and development and the range of treatments required in the school setting.

    *Assesses student and family learning needs and provides education using an individualized approach based on readiness to learn

    *Identifies emerging health trends within the school population and responds appropriately.

    *Utilizes clinical judgment to evaluate health complaints, injuries, and illness during the school day.
  • Planning & Care Coordination

    *Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) using appropriate nursing diagnoses to address identified student needs.

    *Uses assessment data to individualize goals, interventions, and outcomes in collaboration with students, families, school staff, and healthcare providers.

    *Supports students with special health needs through collaboration with IEP and 504 teams.

    *Identifies the need for interdisciplinary involvement or external resources and coordinates follow-through.

    *Facilitates communication between healthcare providers, families, and school personnel to ensure continuity of care.
  • Implementation of Nursing Care

    *Prioritizes nursing interventions based on assessment and reassessment findings.

    *Implements nursing actions in accordance with student health plans, provider orders, district policies, and student condition.

    *Administers medications and treatments safely and competently per provider orders and district procedures.

    *Demonstrates clinical competence in delivering nursing interventions consistent with school health standards, hospital procedures, and age-specific needs.

    *Incorporates critical thinking in clinical decision-making and evaluates student responses to medications and treatments.
  • Health Screenings & Public Health

    *Plans, performs, documents, refers, and follows up on state-mandated health screenings as required.

    *Monitors and responds to communicable diseases and supports infection prevention and control measures.

    *Ensures compliance with state regulations, district policies, and nursing standards of practice.

    *Participates in health promotion and prevention initiatives that support student wellness.
  • Education, Consultation & Leadership

    *Provides and/or coordinates health education for students, families, and staff based on identified needs.

    *Assesses, develops, implements, and evaluates health education programs for students and school staff, including but not limited to First Aid, medication administration, and Basic Life Support.

    *Instructs, demonstrates, and validates school staff in health-related procedures required for individual student care.

    *Serves as a resource to health assistants and other school staff.

    *Participates in the review and development of student and district health policies and provides recommendations as appropriate.

    *Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of school emergency medical procedures and response plans.
  • Documentation & Confidentiality

    *Maintains accurate, timely, and confidential student health records in compliance with legal, regulatory, and professional standards (HIPAA, FERPA, district policy).

    *Documents assessments, interventions, communications, and outcomes in the student health record.



Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of nursing (BSN is preferred; ASN required.



Experience Qualifications

  • 2 years nursing experience, preferably with pediatric patients required



Skills and Abilities

  • Strong clinical judgment and assessment skills (High proficiency)
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities (High proficiency)
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills (High proficiency)
  • Knowledge of child development, chronic disease management, and public health principle (High proficiency)
  • Cultural competence and commitment to student-centered care (High proficiency)



Licenses and Certifications

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Upon Hire Required and
  • Basic Life Support Instructor required within 6 months of hire
  • Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association is required upon hire
