WHAT YOU’LL DO IN THIS POSITION
Job Summary:
TheAssociateClerkship Director for Surgerysupports the Clerkship Director forSurgery withacademic leadership, oversight, and continuous quality improvement for the required Phase 2 clerkship in Surgerywithin the BYU School of Medicine (BYU MED). This individualhelpsensure the delivery of a Christ-centered, evidence-based clinical learning experience that meets LCME standards, upholds institutional values, and prepares students for compassionate, competent, and spiritually grounded medical practice.
This position hasthreedistinct phases:
Under the direction of the Clerkship Director, theAssociateClerkship Directorwillcollaborateclosely with clinicalaffiliatedinstitution leaders and staff, site directors, preceptors, andBYU MEDleadership to ensure consistency,fairness,and excellence across all training environments.
Duties and Expectations:
1. Leadership & Administration
Provides input on andhelpsexecute thestrategic and operationalvisionfor the Surgeryclerkship across all clinical sites.
Maintain compliance with LCME standards related to clerkship design, supervision, assessment, and student experience.
Lead annual clerkship review processes and implement continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives.
Coordinate with the Clerkship Director for Surgery,Associate Dean of Curriculum (ADC), Phase 2 Director, and curriculum committees
2.Curriculum Design & Oversight
Under the direction of the Curriculum Committeeand Clerkship Director forSurgery,develop, review, and update clerkship goals, learningobjectives,instructional activities, syllabi, and required clinical experiences.
Ensure alignment withBYU MEDcompetencies,Medical Education Program Objectives (MEPOs), and mission-centered outcomes.
Provide clear expectations for students and preceptors.
Assistin the creation of student evaluations for the clerkship.
3. Student Assessment & Evaluation
Helpoverseeassessment tools including direct observation, narrative evaluations, workplace-based assessments, OSCEs, and exams
Ensure fairness, transparency, and reliability in grading.
Providetimelyfeedback andidentifystudents in difficultyand refer students to the Office of Student Progress.
Participate in remediationefforts and decisions
4. Faculty & Preceptor Development
Orient and support preceptors across clerkship sites.
Coordinateand assist inongoing faculty developmentwith the BYUMEDDirector of FacultyDevelopment, and otherschool leadersfocused on teaching, assessment, and Christlike mentorship.
Works with their specialty Associate Chairto recruit, train, and evaluate facultypreceptors involved in the clerkship teaching.
5.Site Coordination & Clinical Partnerships
Maintain regular communication with site directors and partners.
Help overseeequitabledistribution of patient encounters and procedures.
Help ensureall sites meet BYUMEDexpectations for learning environment and student safety.
Assistwith preceptor and site recruitment and retention.
6.Learning Environment & Student Experience
Promote belonging,clinical excellence,spiritual growth, and professionalism.
Helpmonitorworkloads, duty hours, and mistreatment concerns.
Serve as a mentor and primary faculty contact during the specialty rotation
7. Scholarly & Institutional Contributions
Participate inBYUMEDcommittees and mission initiatives.
WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS ROLE
Required Degree:
MD or DO degree and board certification inGeneral Surgery or other surgicalspecialty (The required degree must be completed by the start date.)
Required Qualifications:
Eligibility for Utah medical licensure.
Activeclinical practicewith a BYUMED clinicalaffiliatewithin 50 miles of the BYU campus.
Commitment to education and mentorship.
Ability tosupportBYU and Church standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
Teachingor clerkshipleadership experience.
Experience in curriculum development or faculty development.
Experience in distributed clinical education.
Educational scholarship or QI experience.
