WHAT YOU’LL DO IN THIS POSITION
Job Summary:
The Associate Clerkship Director for Pediatrics(Outpatient) supports the Clerkship Director with academic leadership, oversight, and continuous quality improvement for the required Phase 2 clerkship in Pediatrics(outpatient portion) within the BYU School of Medicine (BYU MED). This position works closely and in concert with the Clerkship Director for Pediatrics (inpatient) to provide students with a well-coordinated and integrated Pediatric Clerkship experienceThis individual ensures the delivery of a Christ-centered, evidence-based clinical learning experience that meets LCME standards, upholds institutional values, and prepares students for compassionate, competent, and spiritually grounded medical practice.
This position has three distinct phases:
Phase 1: From now to the matriculation of the first school of medicine class, the role will focus on developingclerkship curriculum as a member of the Phase 2 working group. This is expectedto require approximately10% effort (0.1 FTE) and may be compensated on a contracted/stipend basis.
Phase 2: From the matriculation of the first class untilthe start of Phase 2 Clerkships (~14 months), the focus will shift to recruitment, faculty development, and preparation of all resources needed for the outpatient portion of the pediatric clerkshipThis includes working with our clinical affiliates to develop the training environments needed to ensure all medical students have a high quality pediatric clerkship experience. It also includes working with the curriculum committee and Phase 2 Director to develop didactic materials,required clinical experiences, andevaluate and improvethe curriculum.This phase is expected to require approximately20%effort (0.2 FTE)and will be compensated at the appropriate part-time rate.
Phase 3: Once the students begin the clerkship, the role will focus on running the outpatient portion of the pediatric clerkship. This phase is expected to require approximately 40% effort (0.4 FTE) and will be compensated at the appropriate part-time rate.
The Associate Clerkship Director supports the Clerkship Directorwith workingwith clinical affiliated institution leaders and staff, site directors, preceptors, and BYU MED leadership to ensure consistency, fairness, and excellence across all training environments.
Duties and Expectations:
1. Leadership & Administration
Provide strategic and operational leadership for the outpatient portion of the Pediatrics clerkship across all clinical sites. This position works closely with the clerkship director in Pediatrics to provide a seamless clerkship experience for the students.
Maintain compliance with LCME standards related to clerkship design, supervision, assessment, and student experience.
Assist with annual clerkship review processes and implement continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives.
Coordinate with the Clerkship Director for Pediatrics, Associate Dean of Curriculum (ADC), Phase 2 Director, and curriculum committees
2. Curriculum Design & Oversight
Under the direction of the Curriculum Committee and Clerkship Director for Pediatrics, develop, review, and update clerkship goals, learning objectives, instructional activities, syllabi, and requiredclinical experiences.
Ensure alignment with BYU MED competencies, Medical Education Program Objectives (MEPOs), and mission-centered outcomes.
Provide clear expectations for students and preceptors.
Assist in the creation of student evaluations for the clerkship.
3. Student Assessment & Evaluation
Help oversee assessment tools including direct observation, narrative evaluations, workplace-based assessments, OSCEs, and exams.
Ensure fairness, transparency, and reliability in grading.
Provide timely feedback and identify students in difficulty and refer students to the Office of Student Progress.
Participate in remediation efforts and decisions
4. Faculty & Preceptor Development
Orient and support preceptors across clerkship sites.
Coordinate ongoing faculty development with the BYU MED Director of Faculty Development, and other school leaders focused on teaching, assessment, and Christlike mentorship.
Works with theClerkship Director and thespecialty Associate Chair to recruit, train, and evaluate facultypreceptors involved in the clerkship teaching.
5. Site Coordination & Clinical Partnerships
Maintain regular communication with site directors and partners.
Oversee equitable distribution of patient encounters and procedures.
Ensure all sites meet BYU MED expectations for learning environment and student safety.
Assist with preceptor and site recruitment and retention.
6. Learning Environment & Student Experience
Promote belonging, clinical excellence, spiritual growth, and professionalism.
Monitor workloads, duty hours, and mistreatment concerns.
Serve as a mentor and primary faculty contact during the specialty rotation
7. Scholarly & Institutional Contributions
Participate in BYU MED committees and mission initiatives.
WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS ROLE
Required Degree: MD or DO degree and board certification in PediatricsThe required degree must be completed by the start date.
Required Qualifications:
Eligibility for Utah medical licensure.
Active clinical practice with a BYU MED clinical affiliate within 50 miles of BYU campus
Commitment to education and mentorship.
Ability to support BYU and Church standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
Teaching or clerkship leadership experience.
Experience in curriculum development or faculty development.
Experience in distributed clinical education.
Educational scholarship or QI experience.
