TITLE: School Nurse-Itinerant
QUALIFICATIONS:
A. BSN from an accredited school of nursing
B. Current/valid state licensure to practice as a registered professional nurse in the state of West Virginia
C. School nurse authorization/certification endorsement from the West Virginia Department of Education
D. Two (2) years of nursing experience (preferred) and experience working with youth (preferred)
E. Valid driver's license and personal vehicle for travel to and from schools
F. Such alternatives to the qualifications as the Superintendent and Board may find reasonable, appropriate, and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Pupil Services
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Assist in the planning and implementation of a comprehensive school health program in the school setting.
B. Enforce appropriate immunization guidelines for all students according to West Virginia Code 16-3-4.
C. Assist with health and screening programs as mandated by West Virginia Code 18-5-22 and medication administration as per West Virginia Code 18-5-22a.
D. Assist in the implementation of West Virginia Department of Education Policy 2422.7 School Nurses and Specialized Health Procedure.
E. Participate as a health specialist on the education evaluation team to help develop the Individual Education Plan (IEP).
F. Develop and implement health care plans for specialized health care procedures.
G. Perform specialized health care procedures as necessary.
H. Provide inservice education material and direct instruction to aides and teachers on special technical/medical procedures necessary to provide care to specific children.
I. Train school personnel in basic and specialized health care procedures where appropriate.
J. Initiate referral of students when necessary to appropriate community health resources.
K. Focus on prevention of illness and disabilities and the early detection and correction of health problems.
L. Identify health-related barriers to the learning process and provide assistance when necessary to protect each child.
M. Provide special specific communication updates on health issues or health alerts to appropriate students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
N. Work as a health specialist and resource person for the children, their families, teachers, and administrators working with the children.
O. Perform other job related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with County Policy 1.302 Evaluation of Professional Support Personnel.
CONTRACT OF 200 DAYS
The West Virginia Department of Education is a government agency that oversees the public school system in West Virginia. We are responsible for implementing policies, distributing funds, administering statewide assessments, licensing educators and providing accountability data. Our goal is to provide a statewide system of education that ensures all students graduate from high school prepared for success in college and/or the career field.
