Position Summary

The School Nurse is a licensed health care professional and member of the educational team who supports student health, safety, attendance, access, and academic success. The School Nurse provides direct nursing care, care coordination, health education, disease prevention, emergency response, and consultation for students and staff. The position also supports students with disabilities and chronic or complex health conditions by developing individualized health and emergency care plans and participating in educational planning when health needs affect school participation.

School nursing services will be provided in accordance with the Michigan School Code, Michigan Public Health Code, applicable Michigan Board of Nursing rules, Michigan Department of Education requirements and guidance, District policies and procedures, and recognized professional school nursing standards.

Minimum Qualifications

• Current, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Michigan.
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) or a related health field from an accredited college or university.
• Valid Michigan school nurse certification through the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS), or eligibility to obtain the appropriate certification as required by the Michigan Department of Education.
• Current CPR/AED and first-aid certification; ability to maintain required certifications throughout employment.
• Minimum of one year of professional nursing experience. Pediatric, adolescent, community health, public health, mental health, or school nursing experience is preferred.
• Knowledge of chronic health conditions, emergency response, medication administration, infection prevention, and the care of students with complex medical needs.
• Ability to use electronic records, student information systems, email, and other technology required for documentation and communication.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound clinical judgment in a school environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assess and respond to acute illness, injury, chronic health conditions, and medical emergencies involving students during the school day and at school-sponsored activities as assigned.
• Provide nursing assessment, intervention, follow-up, and referral, and communicate significant health concerns to parents/guardians and appropriate school personnel in a timely manner.
• Develop, implement, review, and update Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Care Plans (ECPs), and other student-specific health plans and documentation.
• Review and implement health care provider orders for medications, treatments, procedures, dietary needs, and other medically necessary services in accordance with District procedures and applicable law.
• Coordinate medication administration practices and provide required training and competency monitoring for designated school personnel.
• Determine whether nursing tasks may be safely delegated; provide training, supervision, documentation, and evaluation when delegation is appropriate and permitted.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential health records, including documentation of student assessments, treatments, medication administration, care plans, parent/guardian contacts, and referrals.
• Monitor student immunization records and assist the District with compliance with Michigan immunization requirements, including required reporting and follow-up.
• Support prevention, identification, reporting, and management of communicable diseases and collaborate with local public health authorities as appropriate.
• Participate in IEP, Section 504, REED, MTSS/student support, and other multidisciplinary meetings when student health needs may affect access, attendance, learning, or educational programming.
• Conduct or contribute to health assessments and evaluations for students with suspected or identified disabilities, as appropriate within the RN scope of practice.
• Coordinate health services for students with chronic or complex conditions such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, severe allergies, feeding needs, mobility needs, and other medically related conditions.
• Collaborate with families, physicians and other health care providers, administrators, teachers, special education staff, transportation staff, food service staff, and community agencies to support student health and safety.
• Provide consultation and training to staff regarding student-specific health needs, emergency response, infection prevention, medication procedures, and other school health topics.
• Assist in planning for student health and emergency needs during field trips, extracurricular activities, emergency drills, evacuations, lockdowns, and other school-sponsored events.
• Support school-wide health promotion, prevention, wellness, and health education initiatives and provide professional learning or presentations as requested.
• Complete required reports, written summaries, data collection, and documentation, including documentation necessary for Medicaid reimbursement when applicable.
• Serve as a mandated reporter and make required reports of suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with Michigan law and District procedures.
• Authorize or complete Personal Care Forms and other health-related documentation, as appropriate, for students on the nurse's caseload or otherwise known to the nurse.
• Maintain nursing supplies, emergency equipment, and health office readiness and identify needs for replacement, repair, or replenishment.
• Maintain professional competence through required continuing education, licensure, certification, and professional learning.
• Perform other duties consistent with the role and scope of practice as assigned by Central Office administration or the building principal/designee.

Physical and Work Requirements

• Ability to move throughout school buildings and respond promptly to health and emergency situations.
• Ability to sit, stand, bend, kneel, reach, and perform nursing procedures as required by student needs.
• Ability to assist with student positioning, transfers, mobility, or emergency response with appropriate assistance and equipment.
• Ability to safely handle exposure to blood, bodily fluids, communicable illness, medications, medical equipment, and other conditions commonly encountered in school nursing.
