The school counselor coordinates and carries out functions that provide educational, career, and personal guidance and counseling services.
- Instruct in accordance with the Naugatuck teacher job description.
- Develop and deliver the comprehensive school counseling curriculum.
- Assist students in the areas of academic issues, career planning, and social/emotional development.
- Provide individual and small group counseling within the realm of certification.
- Consult and collaborate with teachers, staff, and parents in understanding and meeting the needs of students in the school setting.
- Confer with families and professionals in the school and community for the best interests of the students.
- Plan, evaluate, and revise the school counseling program.
- Pursue continuous professional growth to stay abreast of the field.
- Promote and advise students and their parents as to the progress toward issues such as promotion/graduation, ranking, GPA, scholarships, and awards.
- Prepare students for the transition to the next level: post high school activities.
- Advocate for participation in various standardized testing programs.
- Meet with students who are failing a course(s) and contact their parents.
- Meet each student on his/her case load at least once during the course of the school year.
- Work with the Dean of Students to counsel students with excessive absences or tardies.
- Perform additional duties, where appropriate, which are assigned within the scope of employment and certification
Required qualification: Certification in school counseling/guidance
Reports to: Building principal and appropriate supervisor
Work year: by contract
