Job Description

Salary/Terms Standard 210 Day Contract. Salary based on experience and education level per NCBOE salary schedule plus competitive benefits package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.

Classification Professional

Reports to Building Principal/Student Services Director/Social Work Coordinator

Evaluation Evaluations conducted as defined in West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5310 and NCBOE Policy 3220.

FLSA Status Exempt

Qualifications:

  • Professional Student Support Certificate endorsed in School Counselor PK-AD or PK-12.
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10 as appropriate
  • Perform duties as described in the job description below.



The School Counselor serves as a certified professional educator who implements a comprehensive school counseling program designed to promote academic achievement, career readiness, and social/emotional development for all students. The counselor provides direct and indirect services to students, collaborates with families and school personnel, promotes a positive school climate, and utilizes data-driven practices to remove barriers to student success. School counselors shall spend at least eighty percent (80%) of their work time in direct counseling relationships with students.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substance which affects employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated.

Staff members serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.

Staff members have a legal responsibility to help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Counseling and Support

  1. Provide individual and group counseling services to address students' academic, career, social, emotional, and developmental needs. Assist students in developing educational, career, and postsecondary plans.
  2. Identify and support students who are at risk of academic failure, truancy, chronic absenteeism, behavioral concerns, or dropping out of school.
  3. Provide crisis intervention and responsive services for students experiencing emotional, behavioral, or personal difficulties.
  4. Assist students in developing conflict resolution, decision-making, goal-setting, and self-advocacy skills.

Academic Development

  1. Support student achievement through academic planning and progress monitoring.
  2. Collaborate with teachers and administrators to identify and remove barriers to student success.
  3. Analyze student data to identify trends and develop interventions that improve student outcomes.
  4. Assist with student transitions between grade levels, schools, and postsecondary opportunities.

Career and Postsecondary Readiness

  1. Coordinate career awareness, exploration, and planning activities.
  2. Assist students and families with college admissions, financial aid, scholarships, workforce readiness, military opportunities, and career pathways.
  3. Promote career and technical education opportunities and workforce development initiatives.

Consultation and Collaboration

  1. Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and community agencies regarding student needs and appropriate interventions.
  2. Participate in Student Assistance Teams, Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), Section 504 meetings, and other student support processes. (Participation does not include serving as the coordinator of Individualized Education Programs.)
  3. Facilitate referrals to community agencies and outside services as appropriate.
  4. Collaborate with school and district personnel to improve student attendance, behavior, social-emotional wellness, and school climate.

School and Program Leadership

  1. Implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with West Virginia Department of Education requirements and the American School Counselor Association framework.
  2. Utilize data to evaluate counseling program effectiveness and recommend improvements.
  3. Support schoolwide initiatives related to bullying prevention, dropout prevention, attendance improvement, mental health awareness, and positive school climate. Advocate for equitable educational opportunities and student success.

Professional Responsibilities

  1. Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and ethical standards.
  2. Maintain appropriate certification and licensure requirements.
  3. Participate in professional growth activities and required trainings.
  4. Maintain appropriate records and reports related to the school counseling program.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent that are consistent with West Virginia law and the duties of a school counselor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
