The School Counselor provides a comprehensive school counseling program that meets the needs of students and promotes and enhances the academic, spiritual, personal, social, and career development of all Mount de Sales students. Duties include implementing the school counseling curriculum; conducting individual and group sessions; serving as a resource for staff and parents; and making appropriate referrals to community agencies and programs, as needed. The School Counselor must possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills that allow for effective communication with all levels of the school community. The counselor demonstrates dedication to the mission and vision of Mount de Sales Academy.

The School Counselor at Mount de Sales Academy is expected to be a highly skilled professional who works in close collaboration with administration to effectively fulfill the various roles required throughout the day. Mount de Sales Academy seeks to offer a high-quality program that is integrated with religious truths and values. The School Counselor strives to provide opportunities for students to be prepared for life in today’s Church and society through a strong foundation in the beliefs, values, and traditions of the Catholic Church. The School Counselor is expected to model Gospel values in personal demeanor, professional conduct, and the counseling he or she provides to students. Respect for the dignity of each person under his or her care is of utmost importance. Likewise, students are expected to model Christ-like behavior in their interactions with the counselor and with one another.

Essential Functions

• Maintain full confidentiality of academic and personal student information.
• Document student interactions, interventions, and decisions as needed.
• Assist in developing individualized four-year educational plans for students, appropriately aligned with graduation requirements and career goals.
• Conduct developmentally appropriate lessons for each grade level.
• Assist in the administration of academic and standardized testing, including the PSAT process.
• Provide counseling to students experiencing academic difficulties or social-emotional concerns.
• Serve as a resource for faculty and parents regarding students’ developmental needs.
• Facilitate individual conferences with teachers, students, and parents as needed.
• Select a variety of materials and resources for counseling, student, and parent use.
• Refer students and parents to community agencies, programs, or specialists as appropriate.
• Assist with the Honors Assembly.
• Maintain accurate recording and upkeep of student records.
• Communicate regularly with administration regarding issues that impact student well-being.
• Maintain a current understanding of legal issues and procedures related to students and schools.
• Participate in workshops and in-service sessions as required.

Skills / Attributes Required

• Knowledge of the Church’s teachings on moral issues.
• Demonstrated commitment to the mission and vision of Catholic education, particularly at Mount de Sales Academy.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to work in a professional and collegial manner.
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends to support school programs and activities, as needed.
• Ability to manage conflict effectively and work proactively with students and parents to resolve concerns.
• Proficiency in computer use, including Microsoft Office and Canvas.
• Familiarity with educational testing and measurement practices.
• Knowledge of career counseling and community resources.

Position Qualifications

• Master’s degree from an accredited educational institution.
• Certification or licensure in School or Clinical Counseling.
• Experience working with adolescents as a counselor (preferred).
• Proficiency in crisis management with adolescents.
• Knowledge of counseling techniques and referral processes.

Pay Range $64,000 - $70,000, Annualized
