Job Description
The Bus Driver transports students in a safe and efficient manner and performs all activities related to the operation of the school bus.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Bus Driver shall:
- Hold and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with all required endorsements.
- Be a reliable person of good character who shall possess the qualifications and communication skills necessary to perform the duties of the position, and comply with the rules set forth for drivers in all federal, state and local regulations.
- Maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with school and regulatory requirements.
- Have sufficient mechanical aptitude to diagnose minor problems and make appropriate repairs.
- Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, sound judgment, and ethical conduct.
- Exhibit a personality that demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and able to complete Form I-9 employment eligibility verification requirements.
- Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the Department of Education.
- Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities, with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4.
- Pass the state required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6:34A.4.
- Successfully complete all required criminal background checks, medical certifications, and drug and alcohol testing.
JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Drive school buses and transport students between pickup points and school or to various events, activities, and destinations as assigned.
- Be in full charge of the school bus at all times. Work closely with the Bus Aide(s) to maintain discipline and order on the bus. Report unmanageable students to the school bus coordinator and Dean of Culture on the prescribed incident/discipline form.
- Check, clean, and perform minor servicing of buses.
- Check gas, battery, oil, and water before departure. Refuel the bus at designated fueling stations as needed.
- Complete required daily vehicle inspection reports and verify vehicle safety before operating bus on assigned routes.
- Demonstrate knowledge of assigned routes and stops by actually driving the route and noting stops before the first day of service without students aboard.
- Adhere to safety rules when loading and unloading pupils.
- Notify the Lead Bus Driver of any mechanical malfunctions, safety hazards, and/or damage to the body of the bus.
- Adhere to established routes, designated bus stops and keep to assigned time schedule.
- Transport only authorized students.
- Obey all traffic laws and observe mandatory school bus safety regulations.
- Display the highest ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
- Serve as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming, and an effective work ethic.
- Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs and attend any required meetings.
- Use appropriate computers and/or electronic equipment to fulfill job functions.
- Protect confidentiality of records and information about staff, and use discretion when sharing any such information within legal confines.
- Adhere to federal statutes and regulations, New Jersey school law, construction codes, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Board of Education policies and procedures, and contractual obligations.
- Report all accidents in accordance with N.J.S.A. 39-4:130.
- Maintain communication with the office of schools and the transportation team during routes.

Ability to meet DOT medical certification requirements.
