Job Description

T he Renaissance School of Medicine seeks a mid-career, highly accomplished scholar specializing in feminist ethics of care. The selected candidate will join a dynamic, real-world clinical and academic environment that offers extensive opportunities to collaborate with healthcare providers across diverse clinical departments. This role supports engagement with both professional caregiving and the lived, familial experiences of care.

The Center holds a national reputation as a leader in the philosophical and empirical study of caregiving among vulnerable populations. Areas of focus include aging populations experiencing cognitive and physical decline, as well as neonatal and perinatal care involving at-risk newborns. The ideal candidate will bring exceptional expertise in the moral philosophy of care, with particular strength in traditions such as relational feminism and the Black womanist tradition.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching at both the medical and graduate levels, with opportunities to engage students across the broader university, including the School of Social Welfare. Graduate instruction will be part of the MA program in Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics.

We are seeking an intellectually creative and collaborative scholar with a strong commitment to research and publication in philosophy, medical humanities, and related fields. The candidate should demonstrate enthusiasm for producing impactful scholarship in leading journals and academic presses.

The position offers substantial support for public engagement and community-facing initiatives aimed at advancing a broader cultural commitment to ethics of care and shared humanity.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications (Professor Rank)

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent terminal degree) in philosophy, bioethics, medical humanities, or a closely related field.
  • National or international reputation for scholarship in feminist ethics of care or closely related areas of moral philosophy.
  • Distinguished record of peer-reviewed publications and sustained scholarly contributions, including books and/or influential articles in leading journals or presses.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional (e.g., medical) level, with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary education.
  • Significant experience collaborating across disciplines, particularly with healthcare, clinical, or social science partners
  • Proven leadership in advancing scholarship and practice related to caregiving, vulnerable populations, and health equity
  • Evidence of academic leadership, such as program development, mentoring junior faculty, or leading research initiatives.
  • Strong record of service to the profession and institution, including editorial work, committee leadership, or professional organizations.

Preferred Qualifications (Professor Rank)

  • Internationally recognized leadership in relational feminism, Black feminist philosophy, and/or the womanist tradition
  • Extensive experience engaging with or embedded in medical schools, healthcare systems, or clinical environments
  • Established track record of interdisciplinary program-building, particularly in medical humanities, bioethics, or compassionate care initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success in securing external funding, major fellowships, or grants supporting research or programmatic work.
  • Record of public-facing scholarship and engagement, including community partnerships, policy contributions, or media presence.
  • Experience mentoring graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty toward successful academic careers.
  • Scholarly focus on populations aligned with Center priorities, such as aging populations, disability, neonatal/perinatal care, or other vulnerable groups
  • Evidence of shaping the field through editorial leadership, major invited lectures, keynote addresses, or professional society leadership
