Job Location: Dogs Inc Main Campus - Palmetto, FL 34221The Scent Detection Training Assistant supports the daily operations of Dogs Inc’s Scent Detection Program by providing hands-on dog handling, training support, and general program assistance. This role helps lay the foundation for dogs entering scent detection work by reinforcing early training skills, maintaining structured routines, and ensuring accurate documentation and sample management.
This is an entry-level training role designed for a strong dog handler who wants to deepen their skills in a professional scent detection environment. While this position may lead to future advancement opportunities, its primary purpose is to provide consistent, reliable support that helps the program grow.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Training & Dog Handling Support
- Assist with daily handling, enrichment, and foundational training for scent detection dogs.
- Follow training plans developed by the Program Manager and Instructor, ensuring consistency in timing, reinforcement, and criteria.
- Support early scent imprinting sessions and simple training setups under supervision.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe training spaces, crates, and kennels.
- Observe dog behavior and communicate notable changes or training insights promptly.
Sample Management & Documentation
- Follow established procedures for handling, labeling, storing, and transporting scent samples.
- Record exposures, training sessions, and behavioral observations with accuracy and timeliness.
- Assist with preparing training materials, sample setups, and controlled-test environments.
Program Operations
- Support the Program Manager and Instructor with daily tasks such as equipment preparation, room resets, dog movement between locations, and schedule coordination.
- Help manage program inventory, including training tools, cleaning supplies, and scent materials.
- Assist with volunteer coordination related to scent dog handling or enrichment as assigned.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Communicate regularly with Canine Care, Veterinary Services, and other training teams to ensure dogs receive consistent support.
- Coordinate with staff involved in dog movement, health checks, and behavior support.
- Represent the Scent Detection team professionally during internal interactions or demonstrations.
QualificationsJOB SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Minimum 1–2 years of hands-on professional dog handling experience in a kennel, daycare, training, animal shelter, or similar environment.
- Demonstrated ability to read canine body language and work safely around dogs of varying temperaments.
- Basic understanding of positive reinforcement training methods.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to take direction, ask questions, and collaborate effectively.
- Attention to detail and comfort with routine documentation.
- Commitment to humane, ethical training practices and Dogs Inc’s mission.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Technical Skills: Ability to use Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and digital tracking tools; IWDR experience is a plus.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to bend, crouch, lift up to 50 lbs, and work on your feet for extended periods. Regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Work Environment: Primarily campus-based, with daily exposure to dogs, scent samples, cleaning products, and training equipment.
- Supervision: Works under the direct supervision of the Scent Detection Program Manager. May assist in guiding volunteers during training or enrichment sessions.
