The Scenic Carpenter fabricates, assembles, installs, repairs, and restores custom scenic elements for live events, temporary structures, branded environments, and corporate experiences. This position works from drawings, renderings, cut lists, and verbal direction to produce high-quality scenic components safely, accurately, and efficiently.

The Scenic Carpenter may support work in the shop, warehouse, yard, or at event sites. The position requires strong general carpentry skills, attention to detail, adaptability, and the ability to meet project deadlines in a fast-paced production environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate scenic elements, walls, platforms, counters, displays, architectural details, and other custom components.
  • Read and interpret shop drawings, construction drawings, renderings, measurements, and cut lists.
  • Lay out, cut, shape, assemble, and finish wood and wood-based materials.
  • Operate common woodworking tools, including table saws, miter saws, routers, sanders, drills, nail guns, and other shop equipment.
  • Build using plywood, dimensional lumber, MDF, laminates, plastics, and other scenic materials.
  • Assemble components using appropriate fasteners, adhesives, and construction methods.
  • Identify drawing conflicts, missing information, material shortages, and fabrication concerns before they affect production.
  • Prepare scenic components for paint, graphics, upholstery, electrical integration, or final assembly.
  • Participate in tech-ups, quality-control checks, packing, loading, and project preparation.
  • Repair, modify, and restore existing scenic and rental inventory.
  • Track materials and communicate production progress to department leadership.
  • Maintain an organized work area and properly care for tools and equipment.
  • Follow daily JHAs, safety procedures, PPE requirements, and company policies.
  • Perform other production, warehouse, or installation duties as needed.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Two or more years of professional carpentry, scenic fabrication, exhibit fabrication, millwork, construction, or related experience preferred.
  • Experience building from drawings, measurements, and verbal instructions.
  • Working knowledge of woodworking tools, materials, fasteners, and fabrication techniques.
  • Ability to accurately use tape measures, squares, levels, and other layout tools.
  • Ability to perform basic job-related math, including fractions and dimensional calculations.
  • Strong attention to quality, fit, finish, and construction accuracy.
  • Ability to identify problems and communicate concerns before proceeding with work.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or nonstandard hours when project schedules require.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record preferred.

Preferred Experience

  • Scenic, theatrical, event, exhibit, museum, or branded-environment fabrication.
  • Custom cabinetry, millwork, laminates, or architectural woodworking.
  • Installation of scenic elements in temporary event environments.
  • Forklift, aerial lift, OSHA 10, fall-protection, or rigging training.
  • Experience working alongside CNC, metal fabrication, graphics, and scenic paint departments.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, reach, push, and pull throughout the workday.
  • Regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds; team lifting or mechanical assistance is required for heavier materials.
  • Safely work from ladders, lifts, platforms, and temporary structures when properly trained.
  • Work in warehouse, fabrication-shop, outdoor, and active event-site environments.
  • Work around dust, noise, moving equipment, adhesives, paint products, and changing temperatures while using required PPE.

Compensation: $22-$28 per hour based on experience.
