Summary

Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of gatekeeping duties for City Transfer Station and County Landfill operations in accordance with guidelines.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This is the entry level class in the Scale House Attendant series. Incumbents in this classification work under immediate supervision and gradually work more independently as knowledge and skills are acquired. Incumbents in this class may be advanced to the Scale House Attendant II level upon meeting the requirements of that classification, completing a minimum of one year of satisfactory performance as a Scale House Attendant I, in a full-time position or equivalent service, with the City of Redding, and upon the recommendation of the Department Director.

Examples of duties

  • Greet the general public and answer telephone calls.
  • Provide accurate and consistent information to the public regarding facility policies, waste types and assessed fees.
  • Estimate, collect and account for disposal fees and issue weight tickets.
  • Inspect and assess disposal loads for hazardous and/or unacceptable materials.
  • Learn and implement program policies and regulations.
  • Follow written and oral directions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, on the phone, and by radio with employees in the field both orally (on radio) and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Follow opening and closing procedures for the scale houses, i.e. stock cash drawers and supplies, perform end of day close out, cash balancing, back up data base, etc.
  • Data Entry.
  • Payroll Entry.
  • Prepare documents, i.e. over/short forms, change orders, z-out, bills of lading and other documents. Compile special reports.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Assignments include rotating between the remotely located scale house and disposal site, based on a predetermined schedule, working in a non-traditional office environment, split days and Saturdays, some holidays and varying start and end times, and on occasion working alone.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • General office practices and procedures, cashiering procedures.
  • Operation of standard office machines.
  • Basic computer operation.
  • Basic math, English, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Ability to:

  • Interact effectively with the public and employees.
  • Perform a wide variety of tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrate tact, courtesy, and cooperation in handling the public and all those with whom the employee comes into contact with in the performance of duties.
  • Perform data entry with a high degree of accuracy and speed.

Education and Experience

  • Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities qualifying.
  • Typical education would include a high school diploma, or equivalent.
  • Typical experience would include one-year prior clerical or cashiering experience, coursework, or training.

Selection Process:

Final appointment is contingent upon:

  • Positive past employment references
  • Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older)

Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating “Honorable Discharge” from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
